Click here The emergency 911 phone system that links Fishers Island to Suffolk County police and emergency services has become exorbitantly expensive, a county representative told the Southold Town board last week.

Experienced mariners navigating through eastern Long Island Sound are well advised to steer away from the notoriously treacherous Plum Gut off Orient Point and The Race off Fishers Island during peak ebb and flood, when extraordinarily powerful tidal currents can rip along at up to 7.5 knots.

This week, the Southold Town Board hashed out ways to reduce Fishers Island's astronomical monthly 911 phone bills to the county and talked about what sort of car Supervisor Scott Russel should drive now that an aging Crown Victoria is out of the picture.

As the easternmost - and most remote -A hamlet of Southold Town, Fishers Island, which is much closer to Connecticut than Orient Point, has only one New York State trooper on duty and has for years relied on the Southold Town Police department to dispatch emergency 911 calls.
