Traveling Back Through the Door County Advocate Files

10 Years Ago Aug. 11-14 , 1998 A family outing in Jacksonport turned tragic Sunday when 10-year-old Pan L. Kong, Green Bay, drowned in the waters of Lake Michigan. The long-held dream of area conservationists and educators to develop a state-of-the-art nature center at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay moved closer with a grant of $10,000 from Miller Brewing Company. The grant launches the $1 million fundraiser. Penny Paye, daughter of Joseph and Robyn Paye of Brussels and a senior at Southern Door High School, competed in the Miss Teen Wisconsin in Stevens Point. Elmer (Red) and Lou (Curran) Fleming, Sturgeon Bay, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary with an open house at their daughter's house. Tom Utzinger and Bob Ryan were the grand-prize winners with their ship, the USS Pudge, in the quick and dirty boat-building competition during the Wooden Boats Show at the Door County Maritime Museum. Oldham, Aug. 22; Robert J. LaViolette and Julia Gattegno, Aug. 25; and Barry N. DeBaker and Leslie C. Albert, Sept. 5. 25 Years Ago Aug. 9-11, 1983 A freak storm with 50 mph winds raged through Door County. More than two dozen boats were torn from their moorings and boat lifts in the Sand Bay area. Mark Jinkins, president of the HELP of Door County Board of Directors, welcomed Dick Haen as the new director of HELP of Door County. Ann Ullman, Sturgeon Bay, will compete for the title of Miss Teen Wisconsin at the state pageant in Eau Claire. Capt. Rod Baudhuin of the Belgian Queen called the Coast Guard station to say he was four miles out on Lake Michigan and in danger of sinking after his boat had sprung a leak. Coast Guard personnel reported to the scene and pumped out the water so the craft was able to enter Sturgeon Bay under its own power. The Rev. Mark Schwarzbauer is the new pastor at the Assembly of God Church, Sturgeon Bay. Deaths: August Paul, 92, Sturgeon Bay; John Tanck, 82, Egg Harbor; William Krauel, 54, rural Sturgeon Bay; Bernadine Andre, 70, Porterfield; Pat Larson, no age listed, Green Bay; Ruth Kastner, 57, Leesburg; Helen Olson, 74, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Olaf Kaminsky, 80, Ephraim; and Stanley 'Smokey' Bley, 67, Egg Harbor. Teachers have proposed a $500 per person increase for the 1958-59 year. Beginning teachers would earn $4,200 per year under this plan. Dr. Robert L. Cowles of Horseshoe Bay presided at the unveiling of a statue of Chief Roy Oshkosh, chief of the Menominee Indian Tribe, at Murphy Park. Cowles presented the statue, carved by Ernst Dombrowe, and a plot of land around it to the county. A fire apparently started by lightning leveled the tavern and dance hall of Palmer Rosinsky at Little Sturgeon. The Rosinsky family was asleep upstairs but escaped unharmed. Traveling Back Through the Door County Advocate Files

75 Years Ago July 28, 1933 Fire destroyed the Essex and private garage of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Falk early Sunday. The Grasshopper dancing pavilion will have a two-night cherry festival July 29 and 30. The drive to eradicate ragweed that is the cause of hay fever was started yesterday by the Door County Chamber of Commerce. The barn on the Sevastopol farm owned by Art Weber and rented by Harry Chase was struck by lightning and burned last Thursday. The Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. has been very busy the past three weeks, giving employment to some 30 men who are all old-time ship carpenters. Door County cherries are advertised as the main ingredient in pie at the Triangle restaurant in Chicago. Cherry pie there is 15 cents a slice. Deaths: Mrs. Anton (Antonia) Berns, 36, Sevastopol; Mickel Mickelson, Sawyer; Charles J. Nelson, 78, Clay Banks; and Mrs. Karl (Caroline) Krauel, 79, Carlsville. Births: Sons to Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pichette, Sturgeon Bay, July 24; M/M John Purves, Sturgeon Bay, July 28; M/M Fred A. Maples, Sturgeon Bay, July 23; M/M Martin Ficks, Sevastopol, July 25; and M/M Earl Blodgett, rural Sturgeon Bay, July 23. Daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Braunsdorf, Clay Banks, July 25; and M/M Ernest Jackson, Sturgeon Bay, July 26. Licensed to wed: Walter Seiler and Grave Halverson, Forestville; Joseph Roeser, Sister Bay, and Regina LaPlante, Baileys Harbor; and Walter Prokash, Brussels and Celia Schmitz, Forestville. 100 Years Ago July 23, 1908 The dog catcher is on the warpath, so if you have any love for your canine, put a tag on the animal and keep him muzzled. Excitement was caused on Thursday by a fire alarm. Someone had set fire to the partly submerged hulk of an old scow-schooner Nellie and Annie, which lies at the foot of Maple Avenue, just to see it burn. According to the official report of the Bank of Sturgeon Bay, total resources amount to $413,311.67 The Strawberry Islands are now the property of the Marquette Club of Marquette, Mich. It is understood the owners will in due time convert it into a private pleasure resort. In the neighborhood of 25 carloads of strawberries have been shipped from Sturgeon Bay and the vicinity. The new residence Levi Baraboo is having built just west of the Hotel Concord will be a beauty when it is completed. It has been suggested that the name Fish Creek be stricken off the map and the name Gibraltar be substituted. Joseph Wolter was elected vice president of the Bank of Sturgeon Bay this week. Peter Uhl and Fred Augsberger of these parts have been investing in Pitless plum trees and Orenco apples, two of the latest creations of Luther Burbank, the horticultural wizard. 125 Years Ago July 26, 1883 Sheriff Bibinger of Manitowoc came up yesterday after a young man of this vicinity who is wanted for trifling with the affections of some woman in that county. It is reported he will make honorable amends by marrying the woman he wronged. The county treasurer's office recently has been furnished with a fine Diebold burglar-proof safe, and now the custodian of the county's cash is in a more content frame of mind. The Town Board of Egg Harbor is in receipt of complaints about the bad conditions of highways between this city and the village of Egg Harbor, but thus far, little or no attention has been paid to the appeals. President Spalding of the canal company is in receipt of official information from Washington to the effect that an officer will arrive here immediately for the purpose of locating the site of the proposed life-saving station. This region was visited by another heavy rain storm last Saturday afternoon, which continued at intervals for several hour. It appears that the storm was much more severe in the vicinity of Green Bay. The hay crop in the Sevastopol area is so abundant this year that it is difficult to provide storage room. Several farmers are obliged to build new barns or leave the bulk of their crop exposed to the weather with certain considerable loss. Mrs. W. A. Sanderson, wife of the lighthouse keeper on Cana Island, was taken to Sturgeon Bay for rest and recreation due to a prolonged poor health. Death: N.W. Fuller, 71, Sturgeon Bay.
