City officials are weighing a possible annexation of Vero Lake Estates, a move that could double the city's population and pave the way for future annexations that would push the city's boundary far east of Interstate 95.

As of 5:30 p.m., the fire had been 30 percent contained. Up to 20 homes had been threatened but no property has been damaged, according to the Florida Forest Service.

A 350-acre brush fire in Indian River County near Fellsmere is bringing heavy smoke into south Brevard County and Palm Bay, according to a release from Yvonne Martinez, spokesperson for Palm Bay Police Department.

The second annual Children's Day Festival sponsored by Operation Hope of Brevard will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the organization's headquarters, 12285 County Road 512 in Fellsmere.
