Let's keep slums, why tear them down and improve the area?

Hey, when the government becomes involved, your property isn't your own. Watch some judge order the new owners to set aside apartments for former residents at the same old rents!

1 The next step is to tear down the block of stores with the low rent apartments upstairs along Conklin Ave. The two corners are a magnet for illegal aliens and criminals. Home break-ins, drug dealing, cars vandalized, public drunkenness, trash, fencing of stolen goods and GANG ATIVITIES. MS-13 controls the block. I for one am glad that the Village stepped up and addressed the problem that costs Village home owners and businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost property value. Our main street is full of empty storefronts because of how unattractive duing business in the Village really is. Newsday, how about you ask the Mayor how much we spend on our Public Safety Department just to keep an eye on the problems. No, that's not your methodology. It's not news unless Newsday says it is. |

1 No, Newsday doesn't care about that. It would rather make up a moronic talking point about "poor little Latin Americans against Evil Well-Off White Village Residents." I for one, will not fall for this race-baiting! Nice Try Newsday! |

I don’t live far from that area and pass through it all the time. It really does need to be cleaned up and renovated. A few buildings have been done already and there are many more that need to be done. What was once a quaint little town looks disheveled and slum like because of unkempt properties and groups of people cluttering the streets just hanging out doing nothing more than littering. It really is disgusting. I’m glad to see that there are some people who want to clean up the area and restore it. Whoever the people are that destroyed the area need to go and that includes the business owners and homeowners with illegal apartments. There is no “Little Latin America” although it’s starting to look like it. At least until the area is cleaned up, there’s always a group of people on the corner for me to toss my coffee at.

The use of the word "immigrant" in the stry is an attempt by Bart Jones, the writer of the piece, to somehow bring simpathy to the "ILLEGAL ALIENS". Instead of pointing out the costs to our village for providing public services to these non-citizens, Jones makes a bogus case that a patten of "racism" is an ideology shared among all Village residents.
Hofsta's Law Professor who "approved" of his students lawsuit filing, should take a closer look at his own ideology. It's true; "LIBERALISM" rules the campus and SOCIALISM is being taught to our sons and daughters. Why didn't Bart Jones report the dammages that were done by those tenants to 150 Scatougue when John Tosini owned it. His costs to just maintain the building far outstripped the rents he collected. The Oil-fired Central boiler alone, was damaged by tenants over a hundred times. Responsable tenants do not rip doors off of hinges, smash sheetrock, break windows, tear up landscaping, urinate & deficate in vestibules, commit crimes on the property, promote a flurishing drug dealing business and prostitution. Next to go is the Bodega on the southwest corner. |

The deli East of Main St. on Rt. 24 on the Northeast corner should be the next to go. After that they should enforce the no loitering laws and clean up the streets. Even with some places being renovated it looks like a filthy city neighborhood. |

Gentrification is what you make of it. Lack of financial resources for low income areas does not equal lack of pride in ownership. You don't need millions to make it look like the Hamptons, but enough self-respect to make it respectable to others.
Trash attracts trash. If you neglect your property, then face the consequences. Basic business is to obtain a financial profit-period. "Gentrification" happens everywhere -- otherwise we would all be living in shacks from the original settlers of the 1700's or worse. Clean it up. If residents want it, then they will take pride. If not, move on to the next bidder. |

This one isn't the gov't. it's THEM at Hofstra |

And just what is Tenant Ana Maria Mora paying for rent her beautifully REBUILT Fairfield Luxury Apartment?
Please Bart Jones, let slip the cat out of that bag! Please tell us how her life has changed now that her neighbors are paying market rate? Crime, Property Damage, Drugs, Overcrowding??? |

Why dosen't Jonesy live there for a couple of weeks as well as THEM from Hofstra. Me thinks their ideas would change. Nothing better to do a Hofstra than to stir the c-r-a-p? |

"Day Laborers"? "Little Latin America"?
You've got to be kidding! Call it what it is: A socialist/leftist academic group and a bunch of ILLEGAL aliens. Show them ALL the door. |

I live in Farmingdale. There are such great sports programs for the kids, Main Street has become a great area to dine and go drinking--The Library is phenomenal. But 1 little section of Conklin is filled with low life loitering hispanics, most illegal. Those apts are where they lived. I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH SENDING THESE LOW LIVES BACK TO HEMPSTEAD. I pay 10 g's in taxes and own a 500,00 house. I dont want to deal with these vagrants. Racist? Dont care, its reality.

These people are here illegally. If they took better care of themselves and the area they live in maybe this would not be an issue. I applaud Faifield proberties for making an investment in an area that is plagued by gangs and people loitering with nothing better to do all hours of the day and night. Drive by Conklin and Staples st. you will see 50-60 of them hanging out all day and night. How are they making a living ? We pay for their healthcare, kids schooling and incarceration. There are many known MS-13 gang members in the area. There are many decent hard working illegal's but that does not make it right for them to be here. I resent being called a racist for feeling this way, I have never been racist a day in my life. I don't care what color or entnicity someone is, I don't want anyone hanging out on the street corners all day and night wherher they are black, white,or hispanic is irrelevant. It sucks to drive by and see some guy drunk and urinating at 11am with my kids in the car. Not to mention numerous times I've driven by a bloody crime scene because once again someone had to bring a knife into a fight. I understand the cops cannot enforce immigration laws but the 8th pct cops sure can make an effort to stop these people from loitering, drinking and drug dealing all day. Start writing them appearance tickets and next thing you know they all have warrants because they won't show up to court. Then lock them up it will get them off the streets for a little while and maybe send a message that this is not a good place to hang out and conduct their business. Something has to be done and a thank Fairfield properties for taking a step in the right direction. I doubt any of these Hofstra quacks would live in one of these gang and roach infested buildings.

Newsday isn't located far from Farmingdale, maybe they can use some of their front lawn for housing for the people displaced by "gentrification." or better yet, the reporter's neighborhood or the Hofstra professor's neighborhood should welcome them. they can lower the rents or prices of their homes to accommodate. unless the new place refuses to rent to Hispanics who have the income to pay the higher rents, it is not racism, it is capitalism. of course, the maximum number of resident per unit rule would need to be enforced. when you have 15 people in a 1 bedroom apartment pooling their $$ together, they could pay a higher rent.

It sucks that they destroyed that area. I knew a guy that lived on Secatogue and moved because of the influx of garbage. It would be nice to check out Croxley’s Ale House some night, but why go somewhere when you need to carry personal protection for a fun night out. I’d consider trying their new brunch or lunch times, but I don’t like what I see going through town during the day either. |
