Last year was a great year for the Carlyle Lake fishery. High water, which started in mid-May, lasted throughout much of the summer to provide excellent nursery areas for young fish and great spawns for a number of species.

No one was at home at the time of the fire at the Zach Alwardt residence, located along Ridge Road between Mason and Hord.A A passerby notified authorities of the fire about 4:30pm. Congressman John Shimkus has announced funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to the Farina Fire Protection District.

Among the stars who'll be on hand is acclaimed actor James Earl Jones. He'll accept the Oscar Micheaux honor, named for the first African American producer and filmmaker, who was from Illinois.
