Metro-east libraries have plenty to offer for adults and children
Books, books and more books. But your local library has a lot more to offer than the wide selection of romance, reference, human interest, self-help, mystery and children books.
In addition to shelves for browsing, metro-east libraries offer informational classes, services and Internet services.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Lovejoy Library is a research facility that houses more than 800,000 volumes, and provides access to more than 10,000 periodicals and serials, 1.3 million microfilm units, and 36,000 audio visual resources. Read more

“And, I mean he used to sell truckloads of the stuff. His biggest customer was the U.S. military. I mean, he had it goin”
Q. I have been trying to find Instant Shine for shoes. It came in a spray can. I have written to the company -- Strobel Products in Louisville, Ky., -- and my letters are returned. The product was so good, and I miss it a lot.
-- Marilyn Webb, of Swansea
A. I'll bet you don't miss it half as much as Louis Shuckman would have a few years ago.
'I used to get that stuff when I went to military school,' said Shuckman, now 53. 'And, you'd get up in the morning, the bugle would be going and you'd be, like, 'Oh, man, I didn't polish my shoes!' Read more
Teens earn praise, but no promise to reopen venue
“I can say with all certainty we will not be a teen center.”
Mayor Mark Eckert and several aldermen applauded about 50 teenagers who attended the City Council meeting Monday to protest the city's decision to close Illegal Tone Recordings, the teens' prime music hang-out.
Eckert thanked them for the willingness '... to follow through with something you believe in,' but did not tell them he would reopen the venue, which teens said has a recording and a performance space.
City leaders on April 4 ordered Illegal Tone Recordings, at 6 S. Church St., to close, citing due to safety concerns, including large crowds and possible alcohol and drug use. Also, Eckert said, children as young as 14 were congregating there with adults in their 20s. Read more
Who we are and why we like the metro-east
“I think everything has been positive, and I've never had to want for anything.”
Like many St. Louis residents, my perception of the metro-east, or that place on the other side of the river, included only East St. Louis and a bunch of farms.
But once you spend a little time here -- whether it be to live, work or play -- you realize there is much more to the area than you would have thought.
'I love it here,' said Belleville resident Joy Toone. 'I could live here the rest of my life.'
Toone has lived in the metro-east about 12 years, six of them in Belleville. Like several others, the military brought her to the area as her father was stationed at Scott Air Force Base. She said one reason she likes living in the metro-east is because 'there's so much to do around here.' Read more
