Federal officials have completed a final environmental impact statement on the effects of prospecting for copper, nickel and other minerals in the Superior National Forest of northeastern Minnesota.

ELY, MN ---Ely residents who were forced to leave their homes during the height of the Highway One wildfire are now allowed back.

ELY, Minn. -- Firefighters are still working on extinguishing hot spots of a wildfire in northeastern Minnesota, but have allowed residents back into their homes.

A wildfire sparked by a downed power line, fed by tinder-dry terrain and fanned by strong winds threatened the popular tourist town of Ely on Thursday, prompting a hurried evacuation as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze before it could roar into town.

When a downed power line sparked a wildfire in the dry forest near the northeastern Minnesota town of Ely, firefighters were ready to hit it fast and hard.

ELY, MN ---Firefighters are working to put out a wildfire about a quarter mile south of Ely on both sides of Highway One.

Firefighters tell Eyewitness News that 216 acres are still burning in Ely on Thursday night.

In response to a small but fast-moving forest fire just outside of Ely, the Northland Chapter of the Northern Minnesota Region of the American Red Cross is deploying staff, volunteers, and resources to affect those being affected.
