GUNS STOLEN

Aldermen find out about burglary a year after it occurred Less than five days after a hearing that resulted in Police Chief Sam Steward being fired, information on a burglary and robbery of the Elsberry Police Department located at 317 Broadway has come to light. Last week The Elsberry Democrat was informed by an anonymous source close to the situation that the police department had been broken into in June 2008. According to this source more than a dozen guns were stolen. The Elsberry Democrat contacted the Elsberry Police Department asking for an incident report. Sgt. Brian Jeffries stated “I will have to get back to you.” From there General Manager Michael Short contacted City Attorney Robert Guinness. Guinness stated he was just made aware of the case and would look into getting the report. From there reporter Ashley Holton contacted Elsberry Mayor Carla Potts to see if she could assist in getting the incident report. Mayor Potts stated she was innocent and didn’t know anything about the burglary. She also told Holton to go ahead and print whatever we needed to print even if we didn’t have the report. A request was also filed in writing with the City Clerk’s office.
