By Ed Okonowicz -- An estimated 550 Cecil County citizens delayed attendance at July 4 cookouts, parades and family outings to participate in a two-and-a-half hour, midday patriotic rally along Route 40. The second Cecil County Tea Party event followed up the bipartisan group’s premier gathering, held on April 15. Like the earlier tax day gathering, Saturday’s TEA (Taxed Enough Already) grassroots movement’s program continued its efforts to educate the public about escalating taxes and the rampant growth of local and federal governments as well as voice its dissatisfaction with the U.S. Congress and the current administration.

Town officials and others want to get Garrett Island under the purview of the National Park Service.

On Independence Day, about 400 people turned out at the intersection of Routes 40 and 213 in Elkton for a TEA Party to voice their concerns about rising taxes and runaway governement spending. The event was one of 1,600 held nationwide to call attention to the issue. Six of the protests were held in Maryland.

These three men were part of a group of hundreds of people who attended the TEA Party in Bel Air in April.

When a sparkler just won’t cut it and you need a dose of flash and bang for the Fourth of July, hop in the family vehicle and haul everybody to one of the fireworks shows in our area. They’re all free, and several have the added bonus of being held at scenic waterfront locations. It’s also much safer than watching Uncle Bob set off bottle rockets in the back yard. Here at The Observer, one of our favorite fireworks venues is Chestertown.

If the current economy has done anything, it has been to open our eyes to the fact that many of us are just a few paychecks or an illness or an uncontrolled addiction away from financial disaster. Here at The Observer, we are seeing homelessness in a new light as the recession drags on. Certainly, there are many right here in the county who have found themselves in a tough situation due to circumstances beyond their control.
