Spent Munitions Unearthed At Elkton EPA Site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the ongoing cleanup of a Superfund site near Elkton has unearthed more than 26,000 munitions, with many more expected to be found.

The 55-acre site near the intersection of Blue Ball and Zeitler roads was a World War II-era dumping ground for burned munitions.

EPA coordinator Charlie Fitzsimmons says metal detectors show land still to be excavated may contain twice the amount of material already uncovered.

He says most of the material found so far came from flares fired to illuminate artillery targets. The remains of some artillery rounds and grenades have also been found.
