Food Lion could have some well-known company

There's no Food Lion near Harrisburg and the one planned for Elizabethtown still hasn't gone anywhere to date.

Ah, I see...there's a Food Lion "planned" for outside of Harrisburg (north of Middletown), but it's still in the planning stages, not "open" as the article seems to indicate.

Has anyone checked with Gristick's/Zweier's, or Foodland, a couple of Shur-Fine local supermarkets, or the chains such as Weis, Giant, or even WalMart (ugh)....
as to whether our city is already OVER-saturated with supermarkets?

This project is only a distant developer's want...
.... and not a local need.

Since I live within a mile from the proposed shopping complex I am thrilled many of my neighbors including myself do not drive so it will be a great placeto be near us....The Sand Hill and Rockwood areas should benefit also..........

btw...we don't geographically have a Giant in the cityof Lebanon, county, yes, but city, no and the Weis in Lebanon is far away from 12th and Maple........Re:living on the northwest area of Lebanon, most of the grocery stores may as well be on the moon except for Gristick's Foodkart..If you live elsewhere you just don't get it........have a good day everyone

Not long back, Food Lion had a huge problem with sanatation in their departments preparing and handling food. I have no clue if those issues have been addressed, but I doubt they will find high quality workers in the city that will excel at those cleanliness needs. It would also seem that it might bring a lot of older to the area to shop, where we know they cna be preyed upon by the vultures living near the area. Security should seriously be addressed or grandma will get runned over by a thug. The additional traffic on that side of town will not be nice either...particularly as there is a school there tha has younger children. Be prepared. The addition of another supermarket will also have impact on competiton, an many think lower prices. I doubt it. The increase means short run cuts, some leave, then the rest screw us into the ground. Ever notice the 12 packs of soda for 4.59 and how good a deal it is...Hess has them for less. Look deeper, smell the odor, and think....

Maybe we could get some restraunts that would save us from driving to the surrounding counties. I am not asking for much maybe a Texas Roadhouse or Olive Garden. How about a target as well?? While I am at it lets throw an Old Navy in there too. I am looking forward to a grocery store on this side of town. I hate driving all the way to Wal-Mart

Giant is in the city of Lebanon. Look at a map. And I don't know that I'd say Weis is "far away" from 12th and Maple. It's about a mile, maybe less, straight down 12th St.

I rarely agree with Chatty Cathy but she's right about the sanitation issue. It was either Dateline or 60 Minutes that did an investigative piece on Food Lion. They found them adding outdated ground meat to fresh meat in order to cut costs. YUK Unfortunately, that's the ONLY thing I know about Food Lion. If you're concerned about cleanliness, avoid Weis. It's totally gone down hill in quality and appearance.

I guess becasue it is easier to complain.
There are people complaining about the quality of Food Lion: how would anyone here locally know? Where is the closest Food Lion that these people are basing their quality on?
Right now the plot of land this building is going to be put on is a barron waste land. What has anyone wanted to put there in the last 50 years? NOTHING.
Someone wants to make an improvement to the city without using my tax dollars in the form of Grants; I am all for it.

Why don't developers ask residents what services they would like to see in their area instead of just building whatever they think the neighborhood needs? Maybe people living nearby actually prefer their surroundings as they are. Quieter residential areas with less traffic, less noise, fewer problems...what's not to like? Where do these developers live, inner cities? Let's put a strip mall in the middle of their golf course and see how they like it.

You entirely misread me on most issues if you think I am against new business coming into Lebanon. I welcome it. BUT, I welcome well planned and thought out activity, not haste to develop that ultimately costs everyone. First, the development company is in business to make money, not look out for Lebanon. So never think they have alturistic motives...they never do. Second, it is possible to do most things, but should you do something just because you can? I think not always. Third, will it be as profitable for that industry to have a "branch" on every corner like banks now do? The pie is only so big and if you continue to slice it, there will not be a piece large enough for everyone/anyone and then it will go downhill from there. I do wish to see Lebanon evolve for the better. I would like to see the criminal element suppressed and the main street safe to walk again. I'd like to see kids survive not get killed using poison sold daily in our streets or mangled in accidents because they have learend to make bad decisions and do stupid, not the right things. I'd like to see older homes rehabed, not destroyed. And I'd like to see more families opt to stay here with talents that could benenfit the community. Unfortunately, I see a lot going the other way.
Personally, I have not lived here all my life, and I elect to live here. Why would I not want it to improve?

Proud, we just like to argue points...I suspect we could have a lot in common. But it is likely we suffer different approaches to issues and problems. I do vote independent...LOL

Do you actually think that 47K people live between Maple to willow and 13th and 7th?

If you stopped whining for once you would realize that is a number for the entire county which has plenty of 1/4 to 12 million dollar homes in the surrounding areas. But you never SPOTTED them since all you do is criticize everything in LDN and dont have time to take a drive. Humidity is low today, go outside for a while.

Your not going to get a Target, Olive Garden, or Red Lobster in an area where the median income is $20,000 and property values are even less! WAKE UP! MOVE OUT!

Actually it states a 3 mile distance from that location... This would put the range out to cleona, rocherty rd., far east side of avon, and about a mile short of pine meadows. That is a huge distance to cover, considering their basis is for people to "walk" to this place and assume the closeness of it. Not complaining, just stating that the numbers are highly skewed considering all of the higher end places outside of the city. But whatever it takes to make the numbers look good I guess...

Heralding a new store of any type... that goes into direct competition with multiple stores already in place in the same town.....
is NOT GROWTH.

Suppose a new supermarket opens at 12th and Maple. It could be ANY market.
There is NO new industry in this here.. and no new money pool. This is only a NEW COMPETITOR in a direct competition with the 6 or so markets already in place in the city of Lebanon....
and dollar for dollar put into the new supermarket is ultimately directly subtracted from the sales of the others.
Should we sink Zweier's or Foodland so that a new Food Lion can send the profits of their new business to North Carolina?

(I do NOT shop for food at WalMart for this reason. I usually shop at FoodKart or Zweier's. My money remains in the community more so, instead of a percentage of my money heading to Arkansas.)

I don't complain about NEW business.. and NEW efforts. Lowe's is OK.... but it isn't new... just a superhardware (now TWO.. with Home Depot)... but at the cost of 5 or more local type Hardware stores ???

How about MANUFACTURING or SERVICES at 12th and Maple... something that will compete with Phila, NYC, or Baltimore/DC, generating NEW INCOME to the community.... instead of competing with Lincoln Avenue and 7th Street stores, effectively REDISTRIBUTING the SAME money (only)?

Certain businessmen know the difference between shuffling the same local deck of cash.. and bringing new cash (from afar) into town.... and the differences these make on the community.
It's all been known for 150 years here... but seemingly being forgotten.

Mr. Gristik has had it pretty good but he hasn't done much to improve the city of lebanon. All his money goes to his horses which he runs out at penn national. Food Lion is known for doing things in the community. Come on lebanon county republicians, where is your sense of the free market capitalistic system. Capitalism is great until it negatively affects you. I say let the free market system work so Christianson and the rest of the attorneys can get even richer.
I shop for low prices and not a sense of pride to line the pockets of those like Gristick, Christiansen, and all of the local "businessmen" who exploit the workers of lebanon county. Lets compare the wages/benefits of FoodKart to Foodlion.
