Our shelters are required to report animal intake and disposition. Let's look at the data as any serious journalist would.
Within California, mandatory spay/neuter laws have shown an amazing track record. Los Angeles, the first year their 2008 MSN ordinance went into effect: -30% increase in shelter euthanasias, sharply reversing 10 years worth of steady progress -20% increase in shelter impounds Santa Cruz County -animal control costs doubled -impound and euthanasia per capita rates are higher than in nearby counties w no MSN Lake County w MSN has worst shelter kill stats in California, worse than the national average per 100,000 population) . Lake County, CA: 4560 . USA national average: 1000-1300 . California average: 1066 . Nevada County, CA: 163 . Calgary, Canada: 44 Decide whether you want to vote for A BILL or vote for animals. A bill doesn't keep you warm at night, does it? I vote for animals NO on SB 250 |

Wonderful bias, there, Herald. I also hear you deleted a post with the actual facts about MSN instead of letting the world see how wrong you are.
Fact is, the $250M to $400M cost was amended to go from state coffers to local coffers. Where is that money coming from? How is this unenforceable draconian act going to be enforced and paid for? Perhaps the editors ought to actually get real facts first. And remember two things: 1) AB1634 tried this and was overwhelmingly skunked out of the capitol. 2) It took down a career politician with it. |

A waste of the paper the bill is written on .....both the AVMA and ASPCA oppose mandatory spay/neuter because it simply does not work . This is a revenue gathering exercise by making everyone pay to have a dog "intact" . Fortunatley , it will fail , even if passed , as few will ever abide by it , and nobody can enforce it .

This misguided Bill does not in any form provide funding for low-cost accessible spay/neuter in the State of California.When veterinarians charge $500 for a simple spay of a cat,and more for a dog in San Francisco,the problem of accessability becomes the underlying reason for-the problem..Surgical procedures will not be done if forced via law any cheaper-as a matter of fact if mandated there will be NOTHING stopping any vets from price-fixing upwards year after year.
If the State forces surgery then the State will have to provide the outlets to perform them.Leaving that up to free enterprise is a consumer's nightmare.The CALIF. State Veterinary Medical Association is AGAINST SB 250.They are medical professionals and are AGAINST it Santa Cruz County forced mandatory spay/neuter through yrs.a go and is talking about door to door enforcement of licensing to generate money-same as door to door AR 'Volunteers" coming to take your pets.Don't let the "we won't go door to door" lie fool you.Once passed all AR-sponsored legislation changes- making more and more fees,fines,and loss of civil and property rights a given.A key to all Animal Rights activity is to remove the legal term property and replace it with :"guardian".With funding topping 112 million per yr. specifically for making and influencing laws to achieve their Vegan President's agenda to control and end the breeding of all animals-HSUS is firmly behind this and 200 other laws it is pushing this yr. alone being shoved down the throats of all pet owners and animal professionals. Spay/Neuter does not in itself save lives per se.It prevents animals from reproducing,thus eliminating accidental and un or ill-planned offspring.A spayed or neutered dog who is turned in or picked up in a 72 hr. kill shelter is not given a free pass to Life ..due to it's surgery.Spayed and neutered pets become homeless due to the economy just as unaltered ones do. Making low-cost or at-cost Spay/Neuter available for all Californians is the ticket to lowering the population of CA. animal shelters and lowering the euthenasia rate.SB 250 does nothing towards that Goal. |

Pet Responsibility Act,
what a joke, what pet responsibility really is, is to be aware of the reproductive cycle, to not let dogs roam free, provide a safe loving home etc. instead of "pet resonsibility act" it should be called "pet owners responsibility act"! if a owner is responsible there will not be unwanted litters, spay/neuter is not necessarily in the best interest of the animal, early spay/neuter can have many negative longterm health issues I have met many people ignorant to the reproductive cycle of animals, from the woman that said "oh I did not know that the son would breed to the mother dog" groan...or the people that tie out there females in heat for any "bachalor" to come by, there are many more apsolutly stupid/ignorant human behaviors in regards to THEIR pets that result in unwanted litters |

this is a crazy piece of business, a corrupt piece of business in which the people the taxpayers elect, and whose salaries we pay, are in the pockets of a cult of animal worshippers who clearly state that the world would be better off without people. don't take my word for it, read their own MANIFESTOS. this dog and cat thing is but a single symptom of a government no longer by and for the people, and HERM PREDICTS civil war and revolution if the elected people do not STOP in their wrongful tracks and remember who put them in office and who can take them out. When the public realizes the way it has been hornswoggled out of the right to own pets, it will rise up, and I really do not want to live in a REVOLUTION or a CIVIL WAR, but i smell it coming.

Amazing how on national news yesterday there was a report of localities in CA not having the funds to provide emergency response teams, i.e. fire and rescue squads, and now a fringe group is pushing for an unnecessary bill to punish pet owners! Perhaps the elected officials should take a look at localities where responsible pet ownership is the overwhelming majority, such as Calgary.
And this proposed legislation does affect those of us outside of the state of CA if we ever want to risk traveling with our pets or competing in trials or shows in the state. |

The only good place for this Bill is at the bottom of the cat pan.
In a time when the Gov. is begging for money, unity, jobs, and stability a rogue group of people decide it's better to write and try to pass a law to spend money that does not exist and kill a record number of animals. All in the name of progess. If this passes I will recomend the State of California for a Darwin Award. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, or worse actually think it's a compliment, I suggest you research here: http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/ |

This is the craziest piece of legislation CA has ever invented. Where do you think the future dogs and cats will come from? China maybe?
N Korea? They'll come here filled with disease, and then we really will be in trouble. Why not do the logical, common sense thing, and enforce the leash law? Is that too simple for the people of California to understand? I just don't get it, that Californians will follow like sheep right into the lions den. YES, a civil war over animals is surely coming down the pike. |
||||

This bill does NOT create a permit on top of the license. THIS IS A FAIR BILL!
If you do not support it, it makes me wonder what laws you are breaking right now! BE RESPONSIBLE AND THIS BILL DOES NOT AFFECT YOU ....PERIOD! |

Florez, Mancuso, and their Animal Rights Industry handlers are quick to claim that they love animals. What they REALLY love are money and power, to restrict the rights of others, all in the name of "responsibility", "for the animals".
A good explanation of the source of their campaign and lobbying funds here: http://www.vidoosh.tv/play.php... |
||||
yes it does, I am a responsible pet owner that never had an "ops" breeding spay/neuter is a major surgery, that is not for every pet or every circumstance, to take that option away from me and other responsible dog owners, to do what I think is best for MY animals takes away a choice that I expect to have in the US of A go after the morons that have no clue about owning pets, enforce responsibilities of owners, that should create enough monies via tickets. I have called many of times about cruelty to animal issues...the red tape is mind blowing, the responses are slooooow, even having 50 large animals (cows,horses etc.) on only 1/2 an acre with no shelter/water etc. |

Actually, the people that will be punished by this are NOT the ones with mistakes or "overstock". Has anyone asked the breakdown on DOGS vs CATS?? The vast majority of animals euthanized are feral cats! How about a TNR program in the state instead of draconian measures that won't help? Has anyone looked at the numbers of animals being surrendered to shelters because their owners have lost their homes? Get real people - California is going to loose a big chunk of change on this one. The pet business is BIG money. Just keep taking away rights and taking away pets, you can all live quietly without any pets in a few years! |

How many of the proponants of SB 250 really care about their local Sheltering Services?
If the people, who really care about the animals that are ending up in the shelters, would Volunteer Locally, Donate Locally, & Tell everyone~! then we wouldn't be spending this time discussing the pros & cons [our view of it] on SB 250. Why? Because there would be no need for another piece of legislation~! The situation in your & my Shelter is where the answer is, to the ANIMALS-IN_NEED~! Can you say you are proud of your community & it's support of the Local Sheltering? Has the Shelter Management collaborated with their Service Organizations to fund S/N Clinics? with their Youth Org to volunteer? with their Commercial stores to support fund raising & adoptions? with their local media to announce adoptions & fund raisers? Does your community have a Animal Task Force to support Feral Colony Management & Senior Citizen discounted Vet services? I could go on & on, but you all get the idea...It is your SHELTER and it is you that must do it: SHELTERING-MAKING IT THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE~! |

The really sad thing abut this whole SB250 business is that if this is passed, it is the animals that will lose. Those that cannot afford to spay/neuter their animals (or can't afford the license for an intact animal) will hide them. If they are caught by Animal control, they will have to make a difficult decision as to whether they can afford to not only Spay/neuter their pet, but also pay the additional fines. In this economy, those just getting by it will let their animal go to the shelter. That pet will liekly be euthanized. This bill will do nothing but increase the number of animals that are euthanized.
One other point, if all our pets are spayed and neutered, where do you think we'll get pets from in the future?? |
||||
|
NOT TRUE! MSN does NOT lower the euthanization numbers, just look at LA City. Find out why some shelters are keeping every other run open, while doubling up in others. Ask why some shelters are importing dogs from outside the state or the country! Ask WHY the CVMA is NOT in favor of MSN. Ask WHY should private property be under the control of a nanny government. Oh-- that's it - it's a NANNY government!

It is almost incomprehensible how the professional breeders, moneychangers and the AKC have been the unilateral force opposing spay and neuter bills. As the saying goes "its not about you." Their well-heeled lobbyist zooms around the capitol daily in a quest to intercept any kind of progress to stop the misery of cat and dog overpopulation. Maybe their dog shows and agility competitions just don't give them enough hard work to do--like trying to save a half a miliion lives who are lost each year to a fat needle of heart stopping "fatal plus" courtesy of our tax dollars. The ignorance and almost quaint back-woods feelings about animals and reproduction is something to behold. I discovered, on a visit to the Califonria State Capitol that the image of Californai as a "progressive, enlightened" state is far off the mark. SB250 is an effort to get ALL of California on the same page-which is we CANNOT ethically justify runaway litters of puppies and kittens courtesy of the "irresponsible" and just wait for them to magically become "responsible." One wonders how many people would drive the speed limit if just given the choice to drive responsibly? That is why we SO need this legislation. To compell the irresponsibe to comply with a more humane society. People, even educated people are alwys agast and surprised when i share with them that puppies and kittens are killed every week at our shelters. Why? One, there are too many. Two, becuase they have a weak immune system, they are the first to fall ill at the virus festival that is a municipal shelter. And why are there so many puppies an kittens at the shelters? Well, obviously people do NOT find homes for all of their accidental litters--and then the short life to a sad premature death and being tossed into a dumpster is just inevitable. The AKC makes hundreds and thousands of dollars off registering puppy mill dogs (this is a fact). What is particularly galling as someone who just had to drive a 400 mile trip just to save two purebred alaskan huskies as there was only one rescue in the state of California who could take them..is the AKC pretending that they "Care" about "Breed" dogs. Does the AKC have a fund for rescues to share in when all the unwanted purebred dogs that they register end up at the shelters? Do you believe in the tooth fairy? Every breeder "hobby" or larger wll tell you that they do "rescue." That is one of the biggest fictions every perpetrated on polite society. When no Husky rescues could take the boys in Southern California--i googled Husky puppies and briefly considered starting to call Husky puppy breeders to see if they love their breed so much that they would help find a home for these Redlisted brothers. But then came to my senses and realized what a lost cause that would be. California has got its head in the sand on a variety of issues. What is going on at the local pound is one very serious one. SB250 WILL make a difference over time in reducing the amount of unwanted dogs and cats in this state-so that we collectively do not have to be the biggest pet animal slaughterhouse in the country. Thats the audacity of my hope.

Whitney:
Before you write about our state perhaps you should learn how to spell it. MSN hmm.. let's see Lake County has MSN.. has had it for quite some time now.. Lake County also has the LARGEST "kill rate" of any county in CALIFORNIA.. so how's that working for ya Ed and Whitney. How do you "compute" that FACT.. and it is a fact. If MSN works so well why is the kill rate in one of the ONLY counties in the state that has MSN on the books the HIGHEST is the state.. I will tell you.. becasue MSN DOES NOT WORK.. it is punative,it is DANGEROUS to animals, and it is expensive.. most people in Lake County are poor. MSN laws perpetrate the "myth" that "irresponsible people" cause the "problem". They also are some of the poorest. In Marin County ( one of the wealthiest counties in the state) animals are BROUGHT in daily from other counties. WHY?? because people can afford to castrate their pets. and they do.. Lake County has only a couple of vets. One of them is a former CVMA president who supported the ill fated AB 1634. I challange you to call his office and ask how much he charges to spay a 50 pound dog. I did.. fact.. the fees were over $400.00. There is no "low cost " or free castration clinic in Lake County.. just "laws" and lots of poor people who love their pets as much as you do Whitney ( I know you don't believe that but it is true)and some who even do rescue.( I know you think you are the only person who has ever driven miles to pick up a rescue dogs.. but guess what.. you are NOT) The AKC does not have a breed rescue.. you are correct.. that is because ( if you had done a little research you would know this) they are not a club. Each breed club that support the AKC has a rescue organization for each breed. Yes Whitney it is true.. each AKC member club has a rescue.. EVERY SINGLE ONE. We all understand your need for recognition and you have a forum here. It is sadly a mission that is fraught with self importance and hate as noted by your first sentence. The AKC has many organizations that do indeed support rescues, mixed breed dogs, and most importantly HEALTH issues that apply to ALL dogs.. every single one be it pure bred or not. My local "pound" or animal shelter is at alomst zero kill rate except for feral cats as are many in our state. There will always be dogs that need sheltering.. and yes, some that need killing. Some are sick, some injured, some old .. and a few unwanted or owned by people who can no longer care for them who cannot be rehomed. MSN will do nothing to stop those facts. I am aware of only two "husky " breeeds that are pure bred. That would be the Siberian Husky and the Malamute. I know of no pure bred dog known as the "Alaskan Husky". But that aside.. if you didn't even bother to call .. then shame on you for complaining and thank you for picking them up. As the saying goes "It is not about you".. but then why do I get the idea.. that it is all about YOU. |
