Warm, unstable air from Tropical Storm Odile produced a wild downburst of wind and rain in Spring Valley shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday, causing people to clutch such things as gasoline pumps to steady themselves. The National Weather Service says the winds shot straight down from a collapsing cloud as thunderstorms rumbled through areas stretching from roughly Poway south to El Cajon and Bonita.

An ex-con who admitted involvement in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 20-year-old man walking home from work in Spring Valley is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday at the El Cajon courthouse.
