A Carbon County judge on Monday rejected claims from the mastermind of a home invasion robbery of a Palmerton doctor that his trial lawyer was ineffective.

Fernando Velez II, 28, will continue to serve his 61/2- to 16-year state prison sentence on robbery, conspiracy and unlawful restraint charges after the ruling by Judge David Addy.

Velez recruited Kristi Lynn Kauffman and Angel Torres to force their way into the home and rob Dr. John Nicholson and his wife, Joan, on Oct. 16, 2002. He gave Torres a mask and a pellet gun. Read more

When Kiki Peppard applied for a secretarial job, her prospective employer asked if she was married and had children. After the single mother of two answered, she was told she wouldn't be hired because she would cost the employer too much in health insurance.

At her next interview, the same questions come up and the Monroe County mom was turned away again because, she was told, ''mothers take too many days off.''

But the biggest surprise for Peppard, 53, of Effort, was learning this type of questioning is not against the law in Pennsylvania . Read more

Five Monroe County teens were taken to area hospitals yesterday morning after the vehicle they were in crashed on Kennel Road in Chestnuthill Township.

State police at Fern Ridge did not release the names of any of the teens -- one 17-year-old girl from Saylorsburg, three 17-year-old boys from Saylorsburg, Effort and Brodheadsville and a 15-year-old boy from Effort.

The 17-year-old boy from Brodheadsville was driving the vehicle south on Kennel Road when he crashed into multiple trees on the left side of the road, according to state police. Read more
