I did not know these young men, but as a fellow Edinboro Student, they were part of my extended "Edinboro family." My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of these students.

Who was driving the second car, the one Crea was racing with? This wasn't a case of "just kids being kids." These drivers were BOTH old enough to know better -- and what a tragic waste of three lives, and anguish for the friends and families they left behind Two young men, behaving in a totally irresponsible way, not only took their OWN two lives, but the life of an innocent driver on his way to visit his girlfriend. The driver of the second car should be cited as a contributor to this fatal crash -- I won't even say "accident," because it is NO accident when guys old enough to know better do something as dumb as drag-racing on a HILL. Crea was playing roulette, and he lost -- but Sheldon and John were his victims.

If these 2 kids in. the one car were really street racing, then the driver of the other car involved in this "death race" needs to suck it up and come forward. He directly contributed to 3 deaths and should absolutely be charged with tripple vehicular homicide.

Why are people assuming he was street racing with another car? The article only states he was passing at a high rate of speed on a hill.

EDINBORO -- Tom Zimmer heard the muffler of a loud car roaring past his house on Draketown Road.

His curiosity piqued, he looked out his window in time to see two vehicles turn around in his neighbor's driveway.

The drivers of the two cars idled for a minute, talking. Then they took off, one after the other.

"They were going like hell," Zimmer said.

He didn't hear the crash.

But he later learned three Edinboro University of Pennsylvania students were killed in a head-on collision at the crest of a hill just 400 yards from his home. The accident was reported at 5:18 p.m.

Pennsylvania State Police said one of the vehicles that Zimmer saw racing past his home was involved in the collision.

That car was driven by Domenico J. Crea, 18, who state police said tried to pass his friend's car near the top of the hill on the two-lane road in the 3400 block of Draketown Road in Washington Township.

But coming up the hill in the opposite direction was a 2004 Dodge Intrepid driven by Sheldon Harmon, 21.

Harmon, Crea and Crea's passenger, John N. Eyrolles, were killed.

All three were Edinboro students.

Harmon, 21, of Bolivar, N.Y., would have graduated in May with a degree in applied media arts. His concentration was in animation, and he was vice president of the school's animation club.

"He was very talented," said Steve Carpenter, one of his professors. "We saw his potential. This is just really heartbreaking."

Eyrolles and Crea, both 18, were freshmen and had not yet declared majors, an Edinboro spokeswoman said. Eyrolles, of Pittsburgh, and Crea, of Erie, were living in the same dormitory on Edinboro's campus.

University President Jeremy Brown met with students at the dorm Wednesday night.

"There was crying," said Amy Neil, a university spokeswoman. "The entire campus community is devastated."

State police did not name the driver of the other car that Zimmer saw with Crea's just before the collision.

But that person and his passenger stopped at the crash scene and have been identified by police, said State Police Sgt. Mark Zaleski. He said both the driver and the passenger were "young men," but he would not say if they were also Edinboro students.

Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri said he will not decide if the other driver should face charges related to the crash until the investigation is complete, a process that could take at least several days.

Zaleski said he did not want to say if the two vehicles were racing, but he did say the drivers of the two speeding cars knew each other.

"There was clearly a relationship between these vehicles," he said.

He said the two vehicles were driving at a "high rate of speed," and he said accident reconstruction specialists were working to figure out how fast, in fact, they were traveling.

Harmon had been on his way to see his girlfriend, Catherine Moore, when the crash happened. Moore lives with her parents just a few minutes away.

Moore and Harmon were on the phone together when she heard him exclaim just before the line went dead.

Moore and her parents made it to the accident scene ahead of police and paramedics.

"She was standing right next to him trying to get him to wake up," said Julie Moore, Catherine Moore's mother.

"She just kept sobbing for someone to get him out, get him out," Julie Moore said.

News reports this morning are reporting that the cars were seen racing just before taking off up the hill. The driver of the second car was talked to by state police, just have not been identified yet. I'm sure it will all come out later.

My condolences to the families of all involved.

Thanks, Becky, I had not read a follow up. What a tragedy. And he was talking on a cell phone, too?!?!?!?

I still don't think anyone can determine yet if they were racing or not. Another possible scenario,(one that would be even worse and harder to live with for the driver of the other car, imo) would be if he simply was speeding up so as to not allow the passing car to pass. I've seen that happen many times. People get into power struggles on the road, and even if it was a friendly power struggle, it's quite possible he just decided, for the sheer fun of it, to speed up and not let the other car pass.
