Now, I suppose if the pot contained a plant called the Fire Bush.....
Hard to figure out if this is a tragedy or comedy....

That's why I don't garden. I'll stick to stock car racing, where it's safe.

I think lawmakers need to take a look at this, pass some strict laws to make sure this never happens again...

Peat moss is highly flammable if not kept constantly moist (wet).

Little known info that most garden centers/products include in the "fine print."

with flowers!
Anyone who composts regularly knows how hot their piles can get -- hot enough to cook a chicken (slowly, and *yuck*)if done right!

I think all flower pots should be banned in the state. So, something like this can never happen again.

Who's with me?

My Dad was a fire chief in a Central MN town for several years. I accompanied him to several peat fires and I think the 'professor' should have too. Peat fires can burn deep into the ground, not just on the surface as the professor states. That's why they are often so hard to put out.
I've seen this happen firsthand and just because science can't explain it, doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.
I think the 'professor' needs to go back to 'school' with Fire Chief Gasaway and really see what can happen with a bag of potting soil let alone a real peat fire.

I wonder if he deck was recently stained. I've seen fires start spontaneously in plastic bags containing rags covered in wood stain.

Similar to a peat fire...Isn't there a coal mine that's been on fire under a town in PA for years?

Think I'll switch to hydroponic gardening

I just got on line to do research on Peat Moss Fire. Today I spread Peat Moss in the front of my home which is very sunny until late afternoon. We were sitting on our patio with our company and started to smell smoke and we thought that our neighbors were barbacuing until one of our guest walked to the front of our house and noticed that our peat moss smoking in several places. In a couple of places there was actually a small flame. We immediately turn our sprinkler system on used used a hose as well to wet down the peat moss. Fortunately, our friend noticed the problem before it ignited one of our plants next to the house. We could not believe this situation, I wonder if this will be a reoccuring problem or was it because it was just applied and dry in a very hot day.

My goodness, I'm certaily glad your friend noticed it before it got out of control. I wonder if there's been a recent change in the way peat moss is processed? I've never heard of it spontaneously combusting before.

I have never heard of this happening before. I knew peat moss could burn, but not just burst out like this.
