Donated Cellphones Help Troops Overseas

“We are also looking for local families who need cards, too”

Residents can now help support American troops fighting overseas just by getting rid of old, unwanted cellphones.

The donated phones will be recycled, and the proceeds will be used to purchase calling cards for soldiers to help them stay in contact with friends and relatives.

Local residents can participate by donating phones at the drop-off center at Pak Mail, 3 Turkey Hills Road, Suite 3R, in East Granby .

It's all part of Cell Phones for Soldiers, a nonprofit organization started with just $21 in 2004 by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Norwell, Mass. Read more

Police Need Help Locating East Granby Man

Police are asking the public to help locate a man last seen walking in the Spoonville section of town on Tuesday.

Vincent P. Dobruck, 57, of Spoonville Road, has been listed by state police as a missing person, state police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance said Friday.

'Right now, there's nothing suspicious that indicates something criminal,' Vance said. 'Still, we're asking the general public to assist us.'

Police became aware of Dobruck's disappearance after health care personnel contacted the East Granby resident state trooper to report they'd tried for several days without success to contact Dobruck about the hospitalization of a family member. Read more

School Project Part Of Probe

“I know they've asked for documents, but they don't give any explanation when they do that”

The investigators have asked for and received payment records for Diggs Construction - the city's project manager on several school building projects - and for C&R Development, the construction manager for Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School, according to documents obtained by The Courant through a freedom of information request to the city treasurer's office.
