“It's a good way of helping citizens in rural Texas to be able to [take advantage] in the cheaper electric rates that we were all promised when dereg came into law. It's an obvious thing.”
For many of the small-town residents of Eastland, electric deregulation has fallen far short of the promise.
Electric retailers don't pay much attention to the rural area 95 miles west of Fort Worth, and many residents have not switched providers -- even though such a change could lower their electric bills, some say.
'When dereg was passed, all the rural members [of the Legislature] were patted on the head and they were told, 'Don't worry -- you'll have rates out there that will be competitive' -- but that hasn't materialized,' said state Rep. Jim Keffer, the Republican lawmaker who represents the area. 'But now something has got to be done. The time has passed.' Read more
