Its very hard for me to write something so negative but someone has to say it.

I went to the Downers Grove American Legion's opening ceremony of the Vietnam tribute to the 58+thousand men and women who's names are engraved on a Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall. What a debauchery.
It just looked tacky and lacking all the reverence the wall deserved. Get rid of the orange cones and yellow tape, it doesn't have to look like a crime scene...or an accident.

I can't pinpoint what went wrong (a lot of missteps) but it was the epitome of what happens when people who have NO clue on what the Wall means to many Vietnam veterans, have an opportunity and drop the ball. Was there any preplanning?? If the opening ceremony is any indication of what the weekend holds.....what a waste.

The American Legion post officers had an opportunity convey their appreciation of those who sacrificed their lives and to educate the community of Downers Grove about the memorial but instead chose to enhance their egos. I cannot remember one statement made at the ceremony worth repeating or remembering other than the ministers' denidiction. Your display boarders on insulting those who died.

Several Scout Packs/Troops attended Saturday morning, and had a wonderful experience. The scouts were able to participate in a flag ceremony at 9, view the wall as well and view and touch items at a wonderful display of Vietnam and WW II era items at the American Legion post.
Many veterans were on hand to answer questions about the memorial and the articles in their museum. It was readily apparent that the servicemen present were extremely proud of their country and were very reverend about the sacrifices that their fellow veterans made.
The boys received a great education on what it means to be an American, and started to get a feel of what true service means. The veteran's on hand left a very positive impression on the children and their parents.
In reference to the previous post, yes there was yellow tape around the perimeter, but it was simply there to prevent cars from parking too close. It did not detract from the experience at all.
In addition the gentleman at the post offered their services to help at future pack/troop meetings to make presentations regarding military experience, proper handling of the flag, and what it means to be an American. I am extremely grateful for the time and sacrifices they gave and continue to give.
