While you may not sustain a fatal head injury you will probably have a broken neck. <quoted text> Thanks. I went to the source study and I see it is often quoted by biker rights groups and the like. It seems to be the only study, which was based on data taken from another study, that takes that stance. Your choice, but hands down helmets saves lives. There is too much good data that proves that to be true.

When snell tests helmets it's at a 13mph impact with a 4lb anvil. I personally wear a helmet but I also think the motives of snell and dot need to be recognized. I personally believe it should be up to the rider and they can make their own decisions. How many drivers choose not to wear their seatbelts yet it's law and proven to save lives. By not wearing a helmet you are not endangering anyone but yourself. The statistics also don't account for speed, type of accident or other trauma that may have also attributed to death. My only accident was due to an issue with my front tire where I took it down in someones front yard. Although I was wearing a helmet it didn't save me from any injury. Accidents such as those shouldn't be included. There aren't sufficient studies that prove either side. Yes they'll save your life in some instances but not in others and may even cause further harm. You can't always rely on data from a govt organization such as dot or private groups such as snell with a specific agenda. Also those helmets that provide the most protection (full face, which I wear) are heavier and obstruct your view. so the heavier "safer" helmet could break your neck or even block your view of another vehicle. It's a catch 22 and neither is a fail safe therefor the rider should ultimatly choose which risk is greater. rider wrote: <quoted text> Thanks. I'm the father-in-law of bobby and for ya'lls info the guy that turned left in front of them was cited by the police and bobby was and always wears a helmet. I am a rider myself i have a harley with loud pipes and i like my loud pipes just like i liked my loud exhaust on my old muscle cars and i'm sure the rest of u clowns did too.so instead of putting someone down for what they like to do why can't you just say hope everyone is or will be ok and let it at that. thats whats wrong with this country ppl always makin assumptions about something they know nothing about so i suggest before u ppl open ur mouths about anything get your facts right

Bill wrote: <quoted text> It sounds like you riding with them as part of the group? As a rider myself, I have to ask, is this a case of the car turning left in front of the bikes? there were 3 bike riding togather , the car turned in front of the bikes the first 2 didn't have time to get out of the way but the 3rd one did . and as a biker for over 20 years i can tell you that cars and trucks do not watch for bikes they change lanes and pull out or turn right in front of us giving us little to no warning . and helmits do little to nothing over 30 mph to save lives this is reported by dot and snell . and yes both guy involved did have there helmits on the one hurt the worst was wearing leathers too . but hit the door frame of a car broke his shoulder and arm every rib on this side and filled both lungs full of blood . he is very lucky that some nice people stoped and helped him with medical exp . thank you for saving him

I figured it had to be another case of the driver turning left in front of the bikes. let me guess, the driver of the car "never saw the bikes"? I ride and have to agree with everything you said, except for the loud pipes. But like wearing a helmet (I always wear one), its a personal preference. I hope everyone is doing ok but getting cited by the police is hardly enough. Drivers of cars and other large vehicles will always show no respect toward riders as long as they can get away with a slap on the wrist. Its getting to the point that a good ride is one when you don't have to give the finger and your heart doesn't skip a beat.

Bill wrote: <quoted text> It's not a complete study and whats worse is that it is bassed off of other incomplete studies. The study does not take into consideration the style of helmet. A full faced helmet provides the fullest protection but is also the heaviest. This is where the THEORY of neck injury comes into play. The only reports that matter are DOT and Snell. Read them before posting. Somebody here might make a wrong decision about wearing a helmet based on something you typed. Someone will make their own decision regardless of statistics!!! or what someone might post!!! People generally have their own mind set on what's right for them and what they want to do... same token as if your friend jumped off a bridge would you! quit nit picking it all to death!!

I hope Bobby and Ron progress through their injuries steadfastly.
Inattentive, brazen, & selfish acts from 4 wheelers are typical in left turn crashes. He should lose his licence and face criminal charges for vehicular assault. Rice burners grab the attention, but the riders deserve the respect of the road. My brother became an AK amputee last year in a motorcycle crash similiar - 2008 Road King, bright fricken orange with the pipes. Left turn assault. TOUGHEN THE LAWS people. It's time the motorists are held liable for their stupidity, Helmet or no fricken helmet!!!!
My brother is alive thanks to an MARINE VETERAN that had the balls to stop while other several other motorists drove by because his body impeded their path. He almost bled out right there.
Everyone is always in a hurry nowadays...try to live a little longer by slowing down and be more patient PEOPLE!!!! STOP TEXTING WHILE YOU DRIVE AS WELL!!!

To answer Bill's question yes it was a case of the car turning left in front of the bikes and not yielding. Bobby wearing his helmet that night helped save his life for the record. Thank you to Bill for sticking up for Bobby and his friends. It's nice being a member of his family and knowing other people who don't even know him are there.

Long hot Labor Day weekend, and still another day to go. Many vehicles of all types on the road. Buckle up, wear your helmet, drive/ride defensively. And ABOVE ALL, do a lot of praying that YOU are not involved. Wishing for a quick and complete recovery for the gentlemen involved in this most unfortunate accident.
