Diamondhead residents wake up this morning governed by some of their neighbors. The Hancock County community is now Mississippi's 111th city.

Diamondhead became Mississippi's 111th city after a ceremony this morning after which it received its charter from Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.

Diamondhead officially will become a city today at 10 a.m. when state officials present a charter to the prospective government in a ceremony there.

Officials tell the Sea Coast Echo that Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann will issue Diamondhead's city charter at a public ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Diamondhead Country Club.

Residents of that Hancock County community have had decades of experience managing most of their own affairs through a vibrant Property Owners Association.

Diamondhead's prospective mayor Chuck Ingraham made one of his first public appearances Friday following the Mississippi Supreme Court upholding his group's plan for incorporation.

The annual meeting of the Hancock Chamber of Commerce will be Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Diamondhead Country Club.

Ingraham tells the Sea Coast Echo that the new city of Diamondhead could be open for business as early as Feb.
