Beacon of Hope dinner Sept. 24

Community Health Professionals of Delphos will hold its annual Hospice "Beacon of Hope" Dinner/Auction at 6 p.m. on Sep. 24 at the Delphos Eagles. The event features a meal, silent and live auctions and honoring families served by the local visiting nurses and hospice agency.

Van Wert Municipal Court report for August 2014

There were a total of 492 cases for the month as follows: 389 traffic cases, 64 criminal cases and 39 civil cases. Fines and costs in the amount of $70,526.58 were distributed to government agencies by the Municipal Court as follows: $22,104.80 to the State of Ohio, $40,952.68 to the City of Van Wert, $6,746.60 to the County of Van Wert, $127 to the Van Wert Sheriff's Department, $14 to Crime Stoppers, $45 to the Village of Ohio City, $45 to the Village of Convoy and $491.50 to Capital Recovery.

High school dropouts cost states billions

According to The Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there are nearly four million unfilled jobs in the U.S. due to the number of unqualified candidates in the workforce who have not attended college or received any form of training beyond high school. Furthermore, millions of adults don't have high school diplomas and lack the skills and knowledge required to succeed in today's job market.

Bunge holds third annual Safety Day

Second-graders from Delphos City Schools, St. John's, Lincolnview and Spencerville gathered at Stadium Park Friday morning for Bunge North America's third annual Ag Safety Day. More than 280 students moved through stations promoting farm equipment, animal, electrical, grain, water, chemical and lawnmower safety as well as instruction from Delphos Fire and Rescue and a peek inside a Lifeflight helicopter.

Coller faces death penalty in wife's shooting

The man accused of shooting his wife to death in a cornfield east of Delphos on Aug. 14 will face the death penalty according to an indictment filed Thursday. Patrick D. Coller, 43, of Delphos, was indicted on aggravated murder with a felony murder specification and a gun specification, and kidnapping with a gun specification.

Driver cited after rear-ending vehicle

A driver was cited for failure to have assured cleared distance ahead after rear-ending a vehicle at 3:11 p.m. Tuesday. Jane Lehmkuhle, 58, of Delphos was traveling northbound on Clay Street when she stopped at the posted stop sign at the intersection at Second Street.

Norma J "Nukker" Pohlman, 80, of Delphos passed away at 5 a.m. Monday with her son Dale by her side at his residence in Delphos. She was born in Lima on Aug. 19, 1934, to Marcus and Lauretta Miller, who preceded her in death.

Storm damage west of Delphos not from a tornado

A corn crib on the Gordon Moenter property at 9874 Shenk Road was damaged by what Van Wert County Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy is calling an unconfirmed EF-0 tornado. INFORMATION SUBMITTED VAN WERT COUNTY - On Thursday afternoon, Van Wert Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy met with several officials from the National Weather Service Office in Northern Indiana to conduct a complete damage survey from Wednesday afternoon's storms that moved through the county.

Strayer recalls Miss Delphos competition, lifetime friendship

In 1969, Becky Strayer and Phyllis "Phud" Calvelage were both spurred by their boyfriends to compete for the title of Miss Delphos - the first Miami-Erie Canal Queen Pageant during Old Fashioned Canal Days. "I wore a brown leather bathing suit," she said.

Library exploring message center for grounds

Delphos Public Library Director Kelly Rist continues to look for viable options for a digital message center to be placed on the lawn at the library. Library Board members have seen several options and asked Rist to bring any more information to the board's attention as she collects it.

Rec. center to host after-school bowling

The Delphos Recreation Center will host After School Bowling from 3:30 - 4:50 p.m. every Friday, except when the bowling alley has tournaments . Those interested should phone, text or Facebook Dianne Wiltsie by Wednesdays and no later than Thursday mornings to arrange for the bus drop-off and so enough pizza can be prepared.

Community spirit high during - 76 Quasquicentennial

Delphos resident Jackie Fritz has been an integral part of many Canal Day's celebrations and in 1976, during the quasquicentennial - when Delphos celebrated its 125th birthday - the community came together and embraced presenting the history of Delphos through the production 'A Time to Remember'. "We tried to re-create something from the 1951 production of Delphos history out at Stadium Park," she explained.

Director Rick McCoy said a storm cell moving through the eastern portion of the county at 5:10 p.m. may have produced a tornado. McCoy reported minimal damage over a 1.5 mile stretch.

The Delphos Fire Association recently held a celebration for two of its retiring members. Active and retired members of the association gathered to honored Platoon Chief Dale "Bunny" Carder, left, for serving 32 years of service and Platoon Chief Don Moreo for 29 years.
