Survivors, family share stories of 1940 flood
About 5 p.m., the Johns and Yadkin rivers jumped their banks -- by a wide margin -- and widespread flooding nearly washed away entire communities, sending houses floating downriver and washing out 90 percent of the county's bridges.
Power outage affects Watauga, Ashe, Wilkes counties
More than a thousand households were left without power Monday, and hundreds remain without power in the Fleetwood and Deep Gap areas as of 5 p.m. According to the outage map on http://www.blueridgeemc.com, 493 households are without power as of 5 p.m. today.
Elections board upholds previous one-stop plan
In a two to one vote, the Watauga County Board of Elections voted to uphold the same one-stop implementation plan the board adopted for the May primary for the general election in November.

The family and friends of Curtis and Julie Miller may never know for sure exactly what happened to the married couple on Feb. 28. The Watauga County Sheriff's Office has closed its investigation of the incident in Deep Gap, which authorities initially characterized as an "unlawful death" and a suicide.
