Graysville Police Department under investigation

Full story: www.rheaheraldnews.com

One Graysville police officer has been placed on unpaid suspension due to a probe launched on the department by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, officials said this week. According to Graysville Police Chief Thomas Mahoney, officer Greg Higgins has been placed on unpaid suspension pending the results of the investigation. Mahoney told The Herald-News Thursday that the TBI launched an investigation in late July. TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm confirmed Friday the investigation is still ongoing. She said the bureau is looking into the department's involvement with money that had allegedly gone missing.

The story didn't say much. Did the Higgins guy steal some money or did someone else do it and blame him. Also, since when did a chief not stand behind his officers? The story said he was the first to rat someone out. Maybe the chief is the guilty dog since he barked first. Plus, he isn't even from around here he is lazy and the commission should do something like fire him and vote to disban that entire department. They are a total drain on Graysville in many ways. What little that goes on down here the county can handle it and no the sheriff can't request pay to patrol any city in the county, as sheriff he is the county. Let's get a petition drive and turn it in to the commission and abolish these trouble maker cops, seems Graysville has always had the scum of the bottom of the barrel when it came to cops. I know 1 commissioner real good, I'll mention a petition drive if we can get it done. This stuff isn't right.

The man is my friend, I trust him with my life, my wife and my kid's. He did not do this. This crap didn't start until someone new came in and started looking to move up. He couldnt make it at Red Bank. What makes me upset is many people know the truth and refuse to step up.

The thing about knowing the truth is what we do with it once we find it...Ever wonder how if someone was drowning in a river and 100 people were watching they all would "act" as though someone should do something until finally one single person makes a bold dash into the water to risk something for someone else. If this officer is innocent he will be fired and lose his living and be branded where he can probably never work in law enforcement again. I guess we are as we are when we look at a fallen person and say "better him than me". So sad to live in such way only to find out that at the end of a cowardly, pathetic journey we still get to shake hands with and embrace the grave. So sad.

I would really like to see this cd everyone is talking about. Where can I get my hands on it? As a life-long citizen of Graysville, I know at one point the streets were not safe at all, even during the day. Over the last couple of years, we could actually let our guard down and allow our children to walk down the street to visit their friends. Now, the police force is so scarce that even if we did have trustworthy police, they can't clone themselves to be in two places at once. So the chances of them being there when you need them are slim to none. What was the point of the accusations, anyway? Did someone want Higgins out, or did they actually see him take this money? I would love to find out what is found after the TBI investigation is over instead of it being just like other news and never hearing the truth when it is finally revealed. I know I really want to let my children play outside and know they are safe instead of thinking there is a chance they will be harrassed by the actual officers we pay to protect them.

You will not find the truth here on this site. You will only find bickering about the gossip everyone has heard, some believe it, some don't. If there was a good reliable source of information in this area, or even officials that really gave a rat's ass about the citizens around here then questions would be answered, however, has it ever dawned on anyone that maybe that is the best way to keep people from raising hell? Keep em in the dark. I have never lived in a community where so many people complain about things, gossip about things but won't ever back someone up that tries to do soemthing to change what so many complain about. Sure, we can all sit here and anonymously condemn or praise someone, but it really isn't doing anything productive. If this man is innocent I feel sorry for him unless I see for a first time, people coming out of their homes and showing their faces to defend him or support him. Good luck with that.

Nice reporting the vague and unknown. Do we have a stool pigeon/fall guy? T.B.I investigations have known to be just cause. I hate when they comment but then can't because of an ongoing investigation.I hope that they finish this investigation soon so that the public knows what is going on.

Not to deem your comment but let's keep Graysville in perspective. You talk as if you live in Detroit or Chicago. When was the last drive by shooting? What about the last rape or murder or strong armed robbery? For God's sake it is Graysville, pop. barely around 1,000 with a few stop signs 1 bar (outside city limits) and a little store. You make it sound like a Boys in the Hood movie. It's GRAYSVILLE. The only big thing happening there is petty theft and some roust abouts messing with drugs. But to act like you were able to allow your kids to play in the yard, or walk on a sidewalk and now for some reason all that safety is gone is nonsense. I saw a comment on here where someone said they knew or had a good friend on the commission in Graysville and was going to start talks of shutting down the department. That is a great idea and I think you would find Graysville would be just as safe then as it is now. Like I said, it is GRAYSVILLE not Compton, California

I saw one comment where the Chief actually said that "it's not a lot of money." Are we talking about an accounting discrepancy that some convict used as a technicality and the T.B.I came after the officer? "Investigation has been ongoing since July" That is an extremely long period of time for a "small amount of money." This straight up stinks, and that comes from a man that knows Greg Higgins. He is a stand up guy that has worked both at Graysville and Sequatchie county. Greg used to tell me that the State made Graysville police Department quit buying rebuilt wrecked police cars from Dayton Boulevard. And that is a fact. I don't know what is going on, and have not spoken to Greg, but our convorsation will be one of support. I know the countless hours of Overtime that Greg has performed a good service in a Crime Area.

Graysville has a high rate of meth related activity. No, there are not drive by-s frequently that I know of. Anyone that knows the toll of Meth knows what a menace and family altering crime.

Ask your commissioner buddy why he let Graysville buy salvaged titled police cars for the last 10 years. They used Potts before going to Red Bank. That is real scum, if you ask me. How can you on one hand say that their wasn't a lot of reporting, yet call Graysville officers scum?

"We should do anything we can to keep drugs off the streets," said Mahoney. "The dog will pay for itself." Officer Greg Higgins would act as the dog's handler.
"In other business, the board tabled a suggestion by Mahoney to add a drug dog to the Graysville Police Department, requesting additional information before taking action. A dog has been donated but funds are needed for training and to purchase a K-9 patrol car. The board asked Mahoney to give a report at the next meeting with costs and more details. According to Mahoney,$2,000 has already been donated toward the costs. "
