RHEA COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING -May 21, 2013 - FULL VIDEO
This county commission meeting appeared to be just another regular meeting until it came time to vote for the purchase of land to build a new jail. As we all know, the jail and the extensive jail overcrowding problem have plagued the county for the better part of two years. After several core drilling tests, architect footprints and over $200,000 on studies, the county commission had narrowed the proposed properties down to two. Those properties were the Welch property located on 16th Ave. and the Louallen property located on Manufactures Road. These two properties for consideration for purchase by the county were on the agenda. Finally it seemed that the commission was ready to buy land which would satisfy the state's mandate of a "good faith" showing of doing something to fix the jail overcrowding problem.
