Police: Body in Wildcat likely that of woman
A female body pulled early Friday afternoon from the Wildcat Creek is likely that of Kerry Dunsmore, a Lafayette woman who has been missing since Jan. 26. Her official identification won't be available until at least today, when the Tippecanoe County coroner's office completes an autopsy. But clothing on the recovered body -- blue jeans, black-and-gray jacket -- matched what Dunsmore, 43, was last seen wearing, said Detective Jeff Rooze of the Lafayette Police Department. The location also is near where Dunsmore's vehicle -- her purse and cellphone left behind -- was found on Jan. 26 at a Wildcat Creek public access site off Indiana 26 near Monitor. 'We won't know for sure until the autopsy, but we do believe it's her,' Rooze said. According to Matt Tholen, a conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, someone canoeing on the South Fork of the Wildcat Creek found the body shortly before 12:45 p.m. The South Fork runs from Monitor to Dayton. Tholen did not have an exact location of where the body was found, but he said the water was only 2 to 3 feet deep and the body was easily visible. That allowed two DNR search and rescue divers to use waders, rather than taking a boat, to retrieve the body. Dunsmore's husband reported her missing the morning of Jan. 26. The creek was rising, and by the following morning, it had a gauge height of 7.7 feet, or twice the gage height of Friday, according to U.S. Geological Survey records. Foul play was not suspected, and investigators previously told the Journal & Courier that evidence at the scene indicated that Dunsmore walked into the water. Divers with Lafayette-area police and fire departments spent a week searching in and around the Wildcat, but that effort was suspended on Feb. 1 because of swift water conditions.
