70 years after Steinbeck's classic
The Mother Road today turns 70 years old. Fabled Route 66 was formally created as a federal highway in 1926, but it was on April 14, 1939 that John Steinbeck's novel "Grapes of Wrath" was published, elevating the highway to something mystical.
Eight concrete Pleistocene-era creatures are cruising down the highway and will arrive at the San Diego Zoo Wednesday night, after making their way from Wisconsin on a flat-bed truck.
