Columbia man accused of attacking wife denied bail

A judge today denied bail for the 83-year-old Howard County man accused of attacking his wife with a hammer and called the incident 'a very scary situation.'
Calvin Ralph Payne, who appeared for today's bond review hearing via a video feed from the county detention center, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault in connection with the attack Monday evening that left 81-year-old Alma Payne lying in a pool of blood in the couple's Columbia home. 62-year old woman shot, injured by Howard County police
A 62-year-old woman was injured this afternoon when she was shot by police who responded to the senior citizen apartment complex in Columbia where she lived, according to Howard County police.
The woman, whose name was not released, was 'acting erratically' and officers who responded felt threatened, said Sherry Llewellyn, a police spokeswoman. A knife was recovered at the scene, Llewellyn said.
The woman, a resident at Park View at Snowden River, was injured in the lower torso and was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Llewellyn said. Her injury was not considered life-threatening. Read more

Couple among the dead in Howard collision
“She meant the world to her dad.”
Andrew Ray Sturgil and Stephanie Ann Dorsey met just weeks ago.
Sturgil, a 31-year-old native of Kentucky, was in Maryland to see his young daughter. He met Dorsey, 24, through acquaintances renting the upstairs of the Glen Burnie home where Dorsey had been staying, according to a family friend.
Soon after the couple met, they began dating, the friend said.
'She was just real carefree, just always happy, always having a good time,' said Amanda Guy, the family friend who also lives in the home on Ferndale Road. Read more
