NEW HEMPSTEAD - The final day at Merrill L. Colton Elementary School, which closed as a public school for good yesterday, began as usual, with its 300 or so fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students arriving on time at 8 a.m. to be welcomed by smiling staff.
