There are no fires in Cocoa Beach!! Only in Cocoa. In case the staff writers who made this gaff aren't aware, there are two rivers (actually tidepool lagoons, but let's not get picky) and a body of land called Merritt Island between Cocoa and Cocoa Beach. A bit more research by those unfamiliar with the area is definately in order.

Overtime is not given to those close to retirement. There is a list of every single fireman, every shift they are asked if they would like OT the next day. If it is available, it is assigned to the higest person on the list. Then a line is drawn under their name and the next shift it starts from there down, and so on until it returns to the top of the list to start over again. Everyone is eligible for OT, not just senior guys. Get your facts straight.
P.S. I hope you never need us because your house in on fire, your having a heart attack, you were involved in an auto accident, your grandchild drowns, there is a hurricane.....We are paid to be available for 24 hours for anything the public deems an emergency. Sleep and food are necessary items in a 24 hour period.

And if they think the firefighters get to enjoy the meals they eat, my husband has a chronic ulcer from eating his meals so fast because he never knows when the alarm will sound! And when asked if they sit around and watch tv all day, he just laughs and says they are always training or cleaning the trucks, they don't have time to lay around or watch tv!

God bless all firefighters - we can never pay them enough. They and the Police are the backbone of all communities in this country, but unfortunately, are widely unappreciated.
P.S. I have no personal connection with any firefighter, living or dead.

By the way, Proofreader: it should be spelt "gaffe" in the context you've placed it.

I have a friend whose father is a firefighter (it's a second career for him after moving down to Florida). His version is that he gets paid to sit around and sleep. My point is that anecdotal evidence means squat, if your husband doesn't like it why doesn't he do something else? I'm guessing he's unqualified/unintelligent.

That's why he sticks around even with the crummy pay. He had a little boy die in his arms once and decided then his mission was to teach the public about fire safety. He has an EFO degree from the National Fire Academy, which very few have ever achieved, and he is a Captain with a degree in Fire Science. Unqualified/unintelligent? Just the opposite.

Godsgirl wrote: <quoted text> You run into a burning building when everyone else is running out, and see how much you want to get paid. My husband has been a firefighter for 25 years, and the pay is not much more than an administrative assistant's salary. Pretty crappy for risking your life for others. And let's see, he also has inactive TB because of someone he helped save at a rescue call, and he inhaled a poisoneous gas at another fire, so he now has a permanent stutter. Yeah, great job because they get to sleep at night. Woopie. Maybe he will go to heaven, maybe not. There is not god, no heaven, no hell. Stay out of burning buildings.

As I have a few friends that are FF in Florida and my wife cousin is an AC in Daytona FD so I always follow fires and since my dept.LODD teach for the National Fallen Fighters Foundation. Iam amazed that when eavery there is a fire the same commnents of negative nature are thrown at the fire service. I have been a vollie for over 34 years in Jersey and have never read are seen such negative comments as I read here from some people. We do our job career or volunteer because we love the station becomes are second home, our fellow firefighters are second family and none of us would trade it for all the tea in China. Iam just trying to figure out why so many in the State Of Florida have such negative comments.Maybe it is envy, jealousy are with some it sounds like actual hate which reminds me of a quote"People hate those who make them feel their own inferiority"Lord Chesterfield 1694-1773 I know this will bring on a firestorm of more negative comments bring them on enjoy a good laugh.Again to my brothers and sister stay safe wildfires take more fighter lives than any type of fire.

Thank you for your kind post. My husband works in administration now, but is still a certified firefighter, in case they need his help. He is on call every other week and sometimes has to leave at 3:00 a.m. to head back to work to help out. Firefighters are the bravest and kindest people I know, and how anyone can say anything bad about them, breaks my heart.
