Free Skin Cancer Screenings
With more than 1 million skin cancers diagnosed annually, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. One in five Americans and one in three Caucasians will develop it in the course of a lifetime. In fact, one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles your chances of developing melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Exposure to tanning beds before age 35 increases melanoma risk by 75%, and even occasional use of tanning beds can almost triple the chances of developing melanoma. The good news is that with early detection, the survival rate for patients is about 99%.
On Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (TMC will begin at 9 a.m.), Memorial Hermann will offer free skin cancer screenings. Appointments are required. Space is limited, please call today to schedule your appointment.
Screenings will be performed at these Memorial Hermann locations...

Memorial Hermann Heart and Vascular Institute
6411 Fannin
Houston, Texas 77030
Each year, many children and adolescents die suddenly from cardiac problems. When sudden cardiac death occurs in a young person, it is often associated with physical activity or sports. Most sudden deaths in children and adolescents are caused by underlying congenital cardiac abnormalities. In Houston, several young athletes have died of undetected heart conditions in the past few years.
Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Texas Medical Center and the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute are offering low-cost early heart screenings for adolescents and young adults ages 12 and up.
Heart screening includes an electrocardiogram (EKG) and a limited echocardiogram. An EKG tests the electrical activity of the heart and an echocardiogram is an ultrasound test that shows the structure and function of various parts of the heart.
Test results will be reviewed and discussed with you on-site by a board-certified specialist in adult and/or adolescent cardiology, with advanced training in echocardiography. No physician referral is required to schedule this screening.
The cost is $150 (an approximate savings of $700).
Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card. No insurance will be accepted.
Heart screenings are available 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:

Cancer Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast Receives Accreditation from Commission On Cancer
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) has granted a three-year approval with Commendation to the Community Hospital Cancer Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital.
“Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is a testament to the strength of our cancer program and illustrates the scope and caliber of services we provide to patients close to home,” said George Gaston, CEO of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. “We earned this accreditation with Outstanding Achievement by securing all commendations – quite an accomplishment for our first survey.”
The Commission on Cancer was established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922 and is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients. Currently, only one in four hospitals in the United States and Puerto Rico has earned CoC accreditation. Accreditation is granted only to those facilities that commit to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and are willing to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
In order to earn accreditation, the Cancer Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital must provide:
• Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
• Multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• Access to cancer-related information, education and support
• Cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
• Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
• Quality care close to home
To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
The Cancer Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast treats all types of cancers and specializes in breast, colon, gynecological, lung, brain and prostate cancers. It provides state-of-the-art treatment options for patients, including MammoSite® Targeted Radiation Therapy, High-Dose Radiation (HDR) Brachytherapy, radiation oncology, clinical trials and more.
