Bill prompted by drag racing deaths gets preliminary approval

A bill to expand the use of speed cameras in Prince George's County has received preliminary approval from the Maryland Senate after a close vote.

The bill was prompted by eight deaths last month at an illegal drag race near Accokeek. It would allow county authorities to put speed cameras on highways with speed limits above 55 mph.

Opponents say the bill isn't about traffic safety, but is designed just to raise money. Supporters say no one will get tickets if they obey the law.

Speed cameras would not be used Interstate 495 in Prince Georges or on Route 50 or Route 301. Read more

Wynn to resign from Congress in June

U.S. Rep. Albert R. Wynn of Maryland, a Democrat who was defeated in last month's primary, said today he plans to resign from Congress in June to become a partner in a Washington law firm.

Wynn, 56, lost his bid for a ninth term when he was defeated in the Democratic primary by Donna Edwards, a party activist and outspoken critic of the Iraq war. The heavily Democratic district contains portions of Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

In a statement, Wynn said it was a 'great honor' to serve the district but said 'it is time to move into another phase of my life.' He said he accepted an offer to become a partner with Dickstein Shapiro LLP. Read more
