The vehicles should be parked at the end of each shift and let them drive personal vehicles to and from work. If they encounter crime during their commute, they can assist like the countless thousands of other law enforcement officers nation wide who do the same thing without a county owned vehicle supporting their behinds playing a factor. County SAVES MONEY!! The commute time playing into extra patrol time is mostly a smokescreen. People are ready to sacrifice the occassional bust for the busting of the budget by greedy politicians.....aka Janney. Pulling the inmates from community service and trash detail is nothing more than a Janney power-play to show the CC's there are ramifications to their actions. Maybe the citizens will look for a more cooperative sheriff the next time they vote....oops that reqires an electorate that actually thinks about what they are doing. Silly me. The best thing to do is to keep jamming him and his associates with budget cuts and personel cuts. Eventually, what's left will have to offer up a fair amount of work for a fair amount of pay. Janney feels they are "underpaid"! Have you ever met a politician who feels he, or she, or those in their charge are overpaid? Let's get them to the underpaid and overworked condition like the rest of us! I bet there will still be enough money in the budget for inmates to cut and split firewood and have it delivered in county owned trucks to the sheriff's backyard! Now that is what I call putting the WOOD to the taxpayer. TIMBER!!!

You may have hit your head on that fallen tree. If you researched your information prior to your attempt of making a point, you could have used your obnoxious energy on something more important. How about the drug addicts of Cecil County? You see, they out number the Deputies of the Sheriff's office. The department has been cut already and positions are frozen so the shifts are minimal. The coverage and quick response makes a huge difference in getting the bad guys. Here is a case scenario for you: Drug addict burst into your home, let's say you live in Warwick. He was listening to his scanner from 4 houses away so he knows that dispatch just sent every car they could find to a riot at the jail, because they are short handed to. Now he has already beat you crazy and now he is working on your wife/husband. He gains the control he needs to take everything that will make him some extra money. Now to an addict, the little things count and your life means nothing since the reward is his drug of choice. He leaves you and your spouse begging for your lives and he takes your car. By the time you are done crying with your spouse about what could have happened and you call the police, 15 minutes has passed. Your call goes to any available officer left in the county and you may be lucky that some off duty officer is listening to his home scanner, because they all have one of those, right? Let's just say that no one is home to hear your call. The supervisor on duty pulls someone from the riot to go to Warwick. An hour has passed when the Deputy shows up. Your drug addict neighbor is an hour and fifteen minutes away. That's a big head start and he is heading south. Now dispatch could have called an off duty officer in hopes that he answers the phone, hops in his Kia Sophia, and rides to your rescue but I doubt the county will stand behind him if there is an accident on the way to your emergency so the policy would hinder that response. Before you become a critic of what needs to be done to deter the Sheriff's office from doing their jobs, ask yourself a reasonable question. If the Deputy that lives less than a mile from your house had his take home car and was called to cover the southern end of the county, would someone have gotten there sooner? Timber!!!!!

Take home cars are more of an advantage than disadvantage. The county needs to cut corners somewhere else and leave public safety to the Sheriff.

The deputies haven't gotten a raise in 4 years. Now they want to take the cars away too. All surrounding police agencies make more money and the majority have take home cars. Why don't you complain about the troopers take home cars?

If the Deputies have their cars taken away, so should Janney and his administration. That is where the waste is.

Pecker...you seem to be of the frame of mind that the whole world is full of hapless wits at the mercy of criminals and the resultant response of police. Many Americans believe in self-reliance, a principle that can serve an individual and a community well! When the front door comes crashing down, grab favorite firearm, exterminate drug vermin, then call police dispatcher and asked the officers parked at the coffee shop discussing department politics to bring a fresh Joe and necessary paperwork to get the bodies removed. Take away the cars and let the officers and citizens be more self reliant. Your argument fully supports the old adage "the cops are never around when you need them". "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" Only if Pecker is working it.

That explains it...you are a half wit hillbilly with the "I'll shoot you dead if you enter my trailer" mentality. Look "we the people", you are entitled to your "above the law" approach to life but when the tree falls, make sure you haven't smoked the little berries. After all, the police will need to process the scene and you'll need to justify your shot. In the meantime, keep your gun in a safe location with a trigger lock. Notin' like shootin your own kin, who may be hankering the chemical dos see do and become one of those "drug vermin" fer a spell... Ya know, since you preach the "anti law enforcement strategy" so openly you may need to battle the whole family tree. Wake up Peeps...the majority prefer to let the police do their job.

Pecker..based on the example you provided of drug crazed lunies invading my trailer, and the police not being anywhere near to offer assistance, I'd be happy to have a "Jury of my Peers" be the ultimate deciding factor of my fate. That presumes the police and DA would let it get that far to begin with. More than likely they would file the documentation and move on fearing the resultant public outcry over the homeowner justifiably defending his/her castle from the scum you depicted.
In a perfect world, we would not need police or guns. But reality is, as you've depicted, the police can't be everywhere to protect us. If I adopt a self-reliant protect my family mentality I should not be labeled an "above the law" type. In your example, I'd be "within the law" to use self defense.
I'm not anti law enforcement, just realistic in terms of what they can or cannot do. Unlike the Lord, they cannot be everywhere at all times.
Having a County provided vehicle to drive to and from work with is not going to change law enforcement dynamics. It will, however, save the peeps money. Have no fear Pecker, the County Commissioners are weak kneed and won't send a bold message to the Sheriff that they have some power also.
