Make you wonder if he didn't try to light a smoke while using oxygen at the same time. Happens quite a few times and it isn't pretty.Open flame + oxygen is a huge no - no.

I really wish we had more facts on what happened. My 81 year old Mother lives with me and is on oxygen 24/7. It really scares me to hear about tanks exploding. Does anyone have anymore information or suggestions?

You people are really cold. The poor man lost his life in a horrible way and all you're all here speculating as to whether he was smoking.

Wonder if he started smoking again when he came out of the coma? Be interesting to find out exactly what set these 02 tanks off.

Do oxygen tanks spontaneously explode or must there be external ignition? This is a serious question - sorry if it's simple-minded.

O2 tanks will not explode spontaneously, like all tanks they the weakest point is at the top which will bleed off excess air if there is to much prsuure. O2 will not burn it only speed sup the process but is not flamable. If a tank explodes and it can happen it is usually a result of stress fracture are some other structutally a problem that is why you have tanks Hydro staticly tested when required. Also if you use a service you should not have problem.Hopefully this helps.Stay Safe

Does anyone have anymore information or suggestions? the tank exploded due to a fire most likely electrical the equipment that makes 02 in the home is very well tested and has multilpe safty features to avoid something like this. Your mother is safe just NEVER EVER smoke around someone on 02 and follow the recommendations of your homecare provider. In small amounts it is safe if simple rules are followed just so you now the higher the flow rate the more dangerous it gets because you are making the air in a closed area a higher percentage of pure 02 normal 02 is 21 percent in normal room air it becomes volatile as its percentage gets higher, example the astronauts that died on apollo 1 where in 100 percent 02 any spark at that high amount of 02 will cause a very bad fire. MOst home equipment is not capable of making more than 5 liter per minute of 93 percent pure 02 it some thing like home liquid 02 that can get scary.

UN-COMMON SENSE wrote: Do oxygen tanks spontaneously explode or must there be external ignition? This is a serious question - sorry if it's simple-minded. Oxygen is not a FUEL, but it SUPPORTS COMBUSTION. It was the pure oxygen environment that turned a normal fire in Gus Grissom's space capsule into an incinerator in seconds, back in 1967. You need to take extra precautions to make sure that ignition sources are minimized and guarded, that there are reduced sources of static electricity, and that people in the home are mindful of anything that could spark or be a heat source, next to where oxygen is being used. Turn off heating pads promptly after use, for example. Watch for kitchen grease fires, and be careful around hot plates, hibachis and grills.
