Canton Starting Over On Farm Development Rights
The town and Humphrey family are making a fresh start toward the purchase of the development rights of Cherry Brook Farm in Canton Center. The board of selectmen passed a motion Monday authorizing the town to enter into a sales agreement to purchase the development conservation rights to about 63 acres. The board also approved applying for an open space and watershed land acquisition grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection that could cover up to half of the $600,000 purchase. The farm is owned by four siblings and has been in the Humphrey family since about 1743. Negotiations for the development rights have been ongoing for more than four years. Last year negotiations fell through because the town, 'wanted excessive restrictions that we couldn't live with,' co-owner Sam Humphrey said. The family wants to preserve the farm, he said. The Humphreys want to keep the land intact and in the family, but at the appraisal price of $1.5 million, next generations cannot afford it. Adding the conservation easement lowers the value of the land, which Fred Humphrey called a virtue.
