Persistence pays off in romance
“We found we had a lot in common”
Love can bowl you over at any time and anywhere.
Just ask Robert Hill of Cambria, 82, who met his valentine on the county's only lawn-bowling green.
'I was smitten,' the World War II veteran said about first seeing Mary Sneed. 'I was really attracted to her swagger ... walking along with her hands in her pockets like she owned the green' at the Cambria Lawn Bowls Club.
He said to himself that day in May 2005, ' A A'There's a challenge, and I like challenges.' It was a tough sell, though.' Read more

Historic Cambria home gets a boost
“I immediately got good feelings about the project and the people”
Work on restoring the historic Guthrie-Bianchini House in Cambria is expected to resume next week after the Hind Foundation of San Luis Obispo agreed to give more than $100,000 to the Cambria Historical Society.
The Victorian-era house at Burton Drive and Center Street dates to the 1880s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Heirs wrangled over the property for decades while community members tried to preserve it.
The society was able to use donations and a loan to buy the property in 2001 after a court-ordered sale. Read more

Supervisors to pick up cell tower appeal
“I come to this with an open mind”
Sprint Nextel will defend its plan to put two cell phone towers on Fiscalini Ranch Preserve in Cambria when county supervisors hear appeals on the proposed project Tuesday.
The Board of Supervisors also will consider declaring the project to have no significant environmental impact, a stance the California Coastal Commission opposed in June.
Supervisors Bruce Gibson and Katcho Achadjian toured the proposed site last month and were given information about 10 other possible locations for the towers. Most of those sites are in or near residential neighborhoods, which can present problems for cell tower facilities. Read more

County will kick in cash to build new library in Cambria
Cambria's planned new library is officially a San Luis Obispo County capital project, and work on $200,000 worth of studies could begin soon.
Friends of the Cambria Library intend to match the county's $100,000 allocation and all other costs related to the 5,000-square-foot structure, construction of which is expected to cost $4.3 million.
In 2005, the Friends group contributed about $260,000, half the purchase price of the project's 18,500-square-foot site on Cornwall Street between Sheffield and Arlington streets. The group raised the money through book sales, fundraisers and donations. Read more
