Kansan played Doc in 'Gunsmoke'
This is one in a series of vignettes celebrating Kansas history. The series' name comes from the state motto, Ad astra per aspera: 'To the stars through difficulties.'
For 500 episodes on Saturday nights, Milburn Stone was Kansas' most beloved son.
He played cranky but lovable 'Doc' Galen Adams on the CBS series 'Gunsmoke' from 1955 through 1975.
Stone was born July 5, 1904, near Burrton. He graduated from Burrton High School in 1922.
While in school, he decided he wanted to be an actor, even though he gained an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and considered a career in the Navy. Read more
