Push continues to improve Ky. 90 near Glasgow

Work to improve Ky. 90 east of Glasgow may resume by the first of the year. Whether that will happen will depend on the availability of funding, according to officials.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet was in the process of acquiring rights of way along the section of the highway from the Louie B. Nunn Parkway to a half mile east of Lick Branch Road earlier this year, but the work was suspended due to a lack of money in the state’s highway construction budget.

Rep. Johnny Bell (D-Glasgow) met with state highway officials a few months ago to discuss why the project isn’t moving forward at a quicker pace.

"I agree with most of the people in this community that we’ve not been treated fair concerning that road,” he said. “For example, up in Burkesville on this far end of this thing they have spent a tremendous amount of money moving a mountain, straightening out some curves up there that I think was frivolous when compared to the death rate and the danger we have with 90 east. But of course, I don’t have much input in what goes in in Burkesville. Once we figured out that federal stimulus money couldn’t be used for 90 east, I didn’t want to lose that money at all and I also felt that the bypass was very important and that was the reason why it was then transferred to those two sections, because it is better spent here than somewhere else.”

Basketball: Clinton vs Cumberland

The Cumberland County High School gym filled up with spectators Tuesday night to watch Clinton County play Cumberland County.

The girls' game wasn't much to watch. Clinton girls beat Cumberland's team badly.

The boys' game was a whole lot better. The Clinton and Cumberland rivalry has been going on a long time and it was a hotly contested game from the tip off.

Both teams built leads and then lost them. Near the end of the fourth quarter, Clinton pulled away to a six point lead with about a minute and a half to go. Cumberland fought back and ended up shooting two free throws with only three tenths of a second left in the game. Both the free throws were made and the game went into overtime.

During the overtime, Clinton jumped out to a quick lead. The crowd was rowdy and full of energy during the entire game. Their energy transferred to the players, with both teams fighting hard for the victory.

Ultimately, ball control and free throw shooting paid off for Clinton County boys as they built their lead for a decisive victory.

Burkesville Christmas Parade

Around 5:30 PM Saturday the police cars came through town with the lights flashing and sirens bellowing to start the Burkesville Christmas Parade.

WKYR Radio was broadcasting the event as it happened from the Court House Square.

There was a large crowd along the entire parade route and the people in the parade were tossing candy to everyone. The CC High School Band played as the parade wound it's way around the square. There were Christmas characters marching in the parade along with riders on horses and motorcycles. Some of the Cumberland River Cruisers were driving their cars and many of the people running for office in the next election were also in the parade. The Boy Scouts had a float in the parade and I heard the Girl Scouts singing carols on the radio.

This year's parade was nicely done and I hope everyone enjoyed the festivities as much as we did.

Marrowbone Community Christmas Parade

There wasn't a cloud in the sky Saturday while the Marrowbone Community Christmas Parade was marching through town. Kids were in their shirt sleeves rushing out to pick up the candy thrown their way by the drivers of the old cars and people on the parade floats.

Local police officers stopped the traffic on Highway 90 as the parade slowly made it's way through town.

Near the end of the parade the Marrowbone Fire Department truck had Santa Claus riding on top waving to the crowd.

Carhartt to close Glasgow facilties

Employees at two locations of an apparel industry in Glasgow were informed Friday morning that they will be losing their jobs next year.

Carhartt, a company that manufactures work wear, announced the closing of its two Glasgow facilities, a distribution center at 40 Aberdeen Drive and a sortation operation at 702 Happy Valley Road. The closures will affect approximately 100 jobs locally.

"The date for official closing has not yet been determined, but it will be in mid-March (of 2010),” said Lindy Bleau, public relations spokesperson for Carhartt.

Local employees will be given the option of transferring to another Carhartt facility in Hanson north of Madisonville, which is approximately two hours away from Glasgow, Bleau said. Bleau said she was unsure how long a time frame associates would have to decide about relocating, but assumed that they would be given an ample amount of time.
