BOWMAN -- Reddick Richardson joined the Air Force at age 18 in 1953. He didn't move back to his hometown until 43 years later.
The 73-year-old son of sharecroppers is on the county's planning commission, trying to bring jobs to the rural Orangeburg County area that he represents, so the next generation won't have to leave.
'When I was coming up, there were no opportunities,' he said.
After years of losing jobs, Orangeburg County might be on the verge of gaining thousands as importers look inland from Charleston and other major ports for distribution hubs. Read more
