The e-mail address(es) that you supply to use this service will only be used to send the requested article. September 29, 2008 Miners injured in Nicholas County By Ken Ward Jr. Staff writer SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va.-- Two coal miners were injured, one of them seriously, in an accident early this morning at a Massey Energy strip mine in Nicholas County, state officials said.
Jama Jarrett, spokeswoman for the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, said the accident occurred at Massey subsidiary Alex Energy's No. 1 Surface Mine at about midnight or shortly thereafter.
Jarrett described the incident as "a serious, potentially fatal accident."
"A mechanic received severe head and facial injuries while performing maintenance work on a highwall mining machine," Jarrett said in an e-mail statement.
The seriously injured miner was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center, Jarrett said. A second worker was also hospitalized, but his injuries are not believed to be serious, she said.

Yeah. I believe this will continue as long as West Virginia refuses to educate it's young.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.(AP)- Government investigators say a critically injured coal mine mechanic was checking the oil level on a piece of equipment when a protective shield was lowered onto his head accidentally. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration says 29-year-old Adam Perdue suffered massive facial fractures, lesions and bleeding in a preliminary report issued Tuesday. West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training spokeswoman Jama Jarrett says Perdue remains in critical condition. MSHA says Perdue was working on the cutter of a highwall mining machine when the accident occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday at Alex Energy's No. 1 Surface mine in Nicholas County. A spokesman for Alex Energy's corporate parent, Richmond, Va.-based Massey Energy Co., did not immediately return a call Tuesday. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Those reports are mostly wrong. First, he spells his name with 2 d's. Secondly, he is only 21. He is doing very well considering the circumstances. Everyone just hope and pray he will be okay!!

I'm sick and tired of everyone saying it's ok that the damn mines are not safe! After the huge collapse, new saftey features were added by LAW! Doesn't anyone think the LAW should be followed? Are are the Sheeple in West Virginia ok with miners dying all the time? It's gotten to the point that I just can't stop laughing at them. Pathetic. I would say "get a union" But the one you have is so pathetically weak, you might as well work at Krogers. Remember, if you're a miner, get some decent insurance-'cause you WILL die in a mine.

To the real deal: Are you kidding me what type of person are you? My Father has been a miner for 35 years and has missed one day of work and that was for my sisters wedding he has never been hurt or had anyone hurt due to equipment or safety issues. Yes a few have been hurt due to human stupidity. A few in 35 years is not bad go and look at any occupation and see how many have been injured. And if you have such a big problem with it move out of WV and turn off your electric because without this young man and many people and families like him you would be sitting in the dark cold and alone. Don't bother apologizing just thank the next blue collar worker you see. If we didn't have them you would actually have to do something productive with your life.

*Yawn* People die in mines on an average of 1 a day. Call me names,Hate me.I don't care. You don't care if you die in a mine, and niether do I. Go on and tell me how the Coal companies REALLY care and how the coal companies are generious to a fault. Please. The coal companies HATE workers dying on the job,it dereases productivity and costs them out the ying-yang in fines and legal fee's. Not because someone died. My father was a New York City Construction Engineer for Rice-Mohawk steel, so don't try to tell me about blue collar. Miners know the mines ain't safe, and go down to get a check.Period

Your statistics on mining deaths are way, way off. Many other occupations are much more dangerous - commercial fishing for example. I think you just like calling attention to yourself by making outrageous statements. Inferiority complex maybe? Not enough attention as a kid? Does anyone know the current condition of the injured miner? Also, what is the name of the second miner involved? How is he doing? He was injured too, right?
This is a sad situation because having a loved one injured is so hard. My thoughts and prayers are with Addam and his family.

Now you're on a personal vendetta to downgrade all miners because of your own misfortune. How sad....*yawn*. Get over it! Prayers to the family!

I used to work at Alex Energy, and I can tell you highwall miner no. 1 isn't a safe machine.
The safety rails along the pad are bent to the point that they don't even raise or lower anymore. I heard the safety pins that prevent that shield from coming down weren't in place or were broken. They tried to get a welding team to come down there and put some pins on it before the MSHA inspector got there.
I heard the first aid kit they used on Adam was mostly empty and the bandages were opened and dry rotted.
I also heard it took three tanks of oxygen on him before they found one with any substantial amount of air in it.
I don't know if any of this is true, but I could belive it to be.
