Largest solar power plant opens near Blythe
BLYTHE - First Solar, Inc. and NRG Energy, Inc. announced the start of commercial operation for the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar project in California, near Blythe.
First Solar developed and built the 21-megawatt (MW) power plant south of Mesa Verde, which was acquired last month by NRG through its wholly owned subsidiary NRG Solar. Electricity generated by the solar facility is being sold to Southern California Edison (SCE) under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

BLYTHE - A 91-year-old man drove though a vacant house in the 200 block of S. Spring Street the morning of Dec. 18.

Blythe robbery suspects caught in Ehrenberg
EHRENBERG - Three suspects in an armed robbery in Blythe Saturday night, were apprehended the same night in Ehrenberg by La Paz County deputies.
Deputies working a special enforcement detail in Ehrenberg around 8:30 p.m., were advised to keep a lookout for a suspect vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting and armed robbery that happened earlier in Blythe. See more on pvvt.com.

Ironwood State Prison correction officer receives Medal of Valor
BLYTHE - Christopher Briones, an Ironwood State Prison correction officer, was the recipient of the Gold Award on Dec. 10 during the Medal of Valor ceremony held in Sacramento.
At the ceremony, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger awarded 27 state employees who demonstrated extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism.

Riverside County Women of the Year nominations sought
Nominations are being accepted for the third annual Women of the Year Awards for each of the five county supervisorial districts.

Two dead in rollover accident on eastbound I-10 Friday
EHRENBERG - The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 were closed Friday afternoon due to a two-person fatality accident. Four others were also very seriously injured. Department of Public Safety officials were rerouting traffic around Ehrenberg and back to I-10 in hopes to open one lane,which they accomplished. This was a one-vehicle rollover collision, which occurred at 1:34 p.m. eastbound I-10 at milepost 9. Traffic was backed up into Blythe for about seven miles. It took several hours to open both lanes. Final performance for Blythe band TSR (The Socially Retarded)
BLYTHE - Local rock band TSR (The Socially Retarded), are getting together for one last gig Saturday night (6 p.m.) at the Elks Lodge on Hobsonway.
The band, which has been together for the last seven years and has toured the western United States a few times, has been struggling to stay together for the past year as each has been pursuing personal goals.

Skull and bones found in desert near Blythe
BLYTHE - Human bones, including a skull and jawbone, were discovered five miles south of the intersection of Graham Pass Rd. and Chuckawalla Rd. on Tuesday afternoon. Colorado River Sheriff's Station received a call at approximately 2:30 p.m., and upon arrival, found several human bones that appeared to have been at the location for some time. County appeals order to turn over records concerning sex offender's placement
BLYTHE - A judge's order for Riverside County officials to hand over public records concerning the placement of a violent sex offender in Desert Center, is being appealed by county officials.
Riverside Superior Court Judge Sarah A. Christian imposed the order after county officials refused a California Public Records Act request made by John Beach, who was looking for information as to why convicted sex offender Steven Joseph Willet was located to Desert Center despite recommendations to house him nearer the Coachella Valley.
