When you're driving a vehicle, always be at CONSTANT ATTENTION. When you need to look all-directions for traffic, make a special effort to rule out small-er
objects on the road- like pedestrians and motorcycles. What we recommend when checking traffic is to purposely mutter to yourself (or out loud) "NO MOTORCYCLES." If you can get into this habit, this will purposely focus your attention on smaller objects in the roadway. Numerous studies have shown that drivers tend to see primarily what they are looking for. ie. if you are in the habit of looking for cars and trucks, you will tend to miss motorcycles, peds, bikes etc. This is a tragic accident and our hearts and prayers go out for the family and friends of this young man, Mr. Bohannon. God be with you all and give comfort in this time of sorrow. |

This so sad, my mother rides a bike also. When she rides I always worry about her for this exact reason. Especially around here and the reservation, the drivers tend to pull out on the road without caution. They think that people are not driving the speed limit and think they are going to slow down in time. I know I've heard of many deaths for this happening. I wish people would stop doing that, just wait until thier is no traffic then pull out as slow as you want. I myself have almost hit many drivers by them doing this. I'm glad i pay attention because people think they are the only ones on the road. Watch out for the Bikers too. They are out on the raod too. I know i do. I hate it when I hear stories like this it makes me want to tell my mother "Don't ride" but she loves it. Who am I to tell her not to do something that she loves. God bless these people and thier family.

AMEN. the practice of pulling out onto the road with stopping seems to have originated in agricultural areas where there is very little traffic. Around here that bad practice has taken off like wildfire and now eveyrbody does it---always seem to see it in Kirtland. Drivers need to slow down and be patient but I often see them so impatient and pull out between two moving vehicles with only milliseconds to spare! I often see close accidents. What is up with our driving population? Most of them should not be behind the wheel. I always slow down and go to extra-alert mode in Kirtland. Perhaps at license renewal, a test should be given so that people can brush up on their driving skills. A basic physics class would help too! I will be this was near NAPI where there is a stop sign that is barely visible until you get right up to it. There needs to be more to warn people ot stop but it is a typical reservation road----underfunded, neglected and dangerous. |
