Minneapolis police union assails department over officer's firing

Full story: The Minneapolis-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Minneapolis policeman Jason Andersen had become "a high-profile officer" and was singled out for firing even though other officers had been accused - and even convicted - of worse violations than the domestic assault charge he once faced, an attorney for the Minneapolis Police Federation said Thursday.

It looks to me like Dolan is the one tarnishing the Police reputation by violating Jason's constitutional rights. I hope he sues the city back to the stone age.

Thats what they pay union dues for. If they fired every officer that fought with his wife, we would be in an awful situation. Very small police force. Thats what he gets for trying to do his job. They want the four monkeys see, hear, speak. and do nothing.

Seems to me the union is full of it. If they really want the public to judge, have Anderson sign a release so all of us can see the IA file. Otherwise, we listen to the union bloviate about injustice, but can't see the file to judge for ourselves. the department can't release it due to privacy laws.

I am highly suspicious of the union's claims: Right or wrong, Dolan was HIGHLY supportive of Anderson during the Fong Lee case--more supportive than the union, even. Why would Dolan fire Anderson now--after it would have been much easier to throw him under the bus earlier.

I suspect that the domestic case was probably pretty good--hard to prosecute because the victim won't cooperate now, but good enough to show the officer should be terminated. We'll never know though, because as this lousy reporter fails to note, the union refuses to share the case and the city legally can't.

The union is pretty smart...for knowing they can present their case and that the Police Chief is not legally allowed to explain his side of the case.

The reporter is pretty dumb...for not pointing this out. The reporter should have asked the union, "would you and Officer Anderson sign a release that allows the police chief to explain his decision?" If they refused that should be pointed out, and the story judged accordingly. Otherwise Hanners just wrote a press release for the union, he didn't practice journalism.

The PiPress could save a lot of money if they just asked the union to fax their press releases over. As it is, they have to have Hanners write down what they said. Of course, if it was a real newspaper, he would do that analysis.

It is policy that police use friviouls bs evidence to get convictions. They are paid proffessional liars and exadurators. They use their power to harm ever person they are in contact with. It is the arrogance that comes with the job. I am the law I am Above all law. This officer just realized what is like being on the other side of the fence. Todays criminal system does not allow any fair or impartial court procedings anymore so I can do what ever I want metality. I hope this cop enjoys a taste of his own medicine. Fire the bum. Give his 20 years for nothing like plenty of other good people he has done it too. This I hope is his Karma. All of toadys police are career felons.

I think it would be better served if you didn't show your bias by saying "todays police are career felons". I stamps you as an I D I O T who can not spell and can not be trusted in any conversation because of your bias towards authority.

Officer Anderson will get his job back in the end. Let my statement ring in your dull head after he does get his job back and remember to pull you head out of your A S S and started using some common sense and not your pathetic emotions that have run your silly life.

It's wierd in here: either Anderson and all cops are liars and felons, or Anderson is a victim of overzealous media and political correctness.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle: Officer Anderson may have been acting properly, as the police chief asserts, when he shot Fong Lee. Officer Anderson may have acted improperly, as the police chief apparently asserts (though the union won't tell us what their case is--just that THEIR lawyer doesn't think its right), when he abused his spouse. Could it be the stress of the attacks on Officer Anderson during the Lee trial caused the stress that led to abusive behavior?

The point is that I don't think you can draw broad generalities from this case: cops aren't all bad or all good. Anderson may have been worng one time and not another. Or maybe not. We'll never know if ther eisn't more information.

Absolutely right. This was a witch hunt from day one! Jason should get his job back, and then he will be untouchable, and I love it.

Hey Chief Dolan, MPD, Police Union, and now Ex-Officer Andersen: "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

After Fong Lee was murdered, you ALL said Andersen was a "good" cop who was just doing his job, now the Chieif, MPD and the Minneapolis political establishment have decided he was actually a bad cop?

Werent' you ALL trying so hard to pull the wool over all of our eyes, and did everything in your power to cover your tracks (including back paddling and confused even with your questionable evidence handling), including clearing Andersen on two separate occaisions, awarding him the Medal of Valor, getting an all White jury and a blatantly bias judge to deny the justice for Fong Lee...only to conclude that Andersen is in fact NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be with the MPD!?!

Eat your own words! And go home to your family with a clear conscience!?!

Everyone is watching this continue to unfold. I sure hope ALL of you have the courage to tell the truth (something you should have done the minute right after Fong Lee was shot in 2006), to come clean, and stop burying yourselves in more lies, which is a never ending vicious circle that will surely haunt ALL invovled...as it has for Andersen at the moment.

Please note your source surrounding your information so we can review you FACTS concerning this case. You don't need me or anyone else to provide FACTS. The FACTS are and have been public and available since the minute after Fong Lee was killed in 2006. They're called Police Reports, Court Transcripts, public statements to the presses by no other than All the individuals and groups I mentioned. There's no shortage of facts, only morals and clear conscience!

Correct, and those reports and statements you bring up are the very same ones that aquitted Officer anderson, and you may want to use them and read them without your biased OPINION and stop making false accusations of his guilt. Your OPINION means nothing to anyone involved in the case and it never will. You are just a biased person speaking out of your senseless emotion who NEVER even looked at those reports that you mentioned.

The Police Union is correct. There have been MPD officers who have multiple DWIs and multiple arrests for things such as disorderly conduct etc. None of them lost their jobs for their convictions, much less a charge that was dismissed as the case with Andersen.

Give the guy a break. He was judged by his peers and a grand jury/jury found him innocent. Let the Fong Lee thing go already.

As for this domestic deal, there is ample evidence that the inept arresting officer/s bungled this call from the beginning, which is why the charges were never filed in the first place. You don't seek out witnesses to get other cops arrested. If you are a cop, you know this. I'm not saying that cops should never be arrested, but this is not a case where an arrest should have been made. These cops knew immediately that she wasn't going to cooperate, but chose to try to advance their own careers at the expense of a decorated MPD officer. You say what you may about Andersen, but he has more guts, knowledge, awards and skills than any of the officers who arrested him. Enough said.
