Northampton County Controller John Schimmel is normally a glass-half-full kind of person.
A day after voters -- by a paper-thin margin of 1 percent or less -- seemingly failed to return him to office for a fourth four-year term, the Upper Mount Bethel Township Republican still managed a joke about optimism, and said the apparent defeat will allow him more time for other things, like the grandchild his family is expecting next year.
''We'll see how it goes,'' said Schimmel, who said he'll wait for the official county vote certification process that begins Friday and continues into next week. Read more

As a baby sitter shrieked for help to pull an infant from a burning home Wednesday afternoon, Nancy Run Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Hauze raced into a bedroom but was blinded by black smoke.
Hauze knew the baby was somewhere in the room, but said he could not see him. When he heard a wail from a nearby bassinet, Hauze quickly scooped up the baby boy and raced from the Bethlehem Township home.
''When he started to cry, I had to follow the sound to him,'' said Hauze, 24. ''With all the smoke, you couldn't see a thing in there. I'm glad he's OK.'' Read more
