The Lowell Women's Club and Lowell Parks and Recreation are sponsoring the Miss Freedom Festival Pageant 6 p.m. March 29 at Holbrook Middle School.
Girls ages 1-18 are eligible to compete. Contestants will compete in beauty and sportswear.
Contestants 7-18 will have the chance to compete in a talent competition with the scores counting toward the overall title.
Winners will be selected in each of the six age categories. There also will be an overall talent winner and overall photogenic winner. Read more

Public Safety Announcements | Melanie Bass: 302 illegal immigrants processed in '07
In 2007, Gaston County jail officials processed 302 illegal immigrants, Sheriff Alan Cloninger said.
Since May, the county has used Immigration and Customs Enforcement to better identify people illegally in the country. The national program is part of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act passed by Congress in 2006. It's a collaborative effort in which immigration agents train jail officials to spot illegal immigrants and give them access to ICE computer database information. Read more
