High School Athletic Conferences: Encouraging news in realignment proposals
“We also want to promote natural rivalries.”
Gaston and Lincoln officials are encouraged after Thursday's realignment meeting, which could help virtually all local schools stay together in conferences.
The meeting in Hickory featured proposals from schools around the West Region. One proposal quickly gaining support among Gaston schools would place five Gaston 3A schools -- North Gaston, Forestview, South Point, Hunter Huss and Ashbrook -- together with three from Cleveland County.
That would move South Point and Hunter Huss away from the initial conference proposed by the N.C. High School Athletic Association. That conference grouped those two schools with schools from Mecklenburg, Union and Anson counties. Read more

Holiday Celebration: MLK Jr. Unity Awards to be given Monday
The Gaston Clergy & Citizens Coalition (GC3) will present the 2008 Gaston County Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Awards 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza at Marietta Street and Long Avenue.
The awards will be presented to T.J. Solomon II and posthumously to Marie Humphrey Hamilton.
A native of Dallas, Hamilton was a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University and received her master's degree from Columbia University in New York. She began her teaching career at Stewart Elementary School in Bessemer City and continued at Highland Elementary and Ranlo schools. Hamilton moved with her husband to Atlanta in 1949, where she taught for 13 years, after which she returned to Gaston County Schools and retired in 1974. Read more

South Iredell girls' basketball team hopes to get first win tomorrow
On Friday night, the South Iredell girls' basketball game will get another chance.
The players say they just need one win to break the curse. At 0-14, the players say they just need one break to go their way.
Maybe it will happen at 6 p.m. at Bessemer City?
With a team consisting of one player with previous varsity experience, South Iredell has losses that include a 77-2 drubbing to Lake Norman and a 78-10 defeat to Statesville.
Still, no players have quit the team and Tish McCombs -- the one player with varsity experience -- is working her way into game shape after sitting out the beginning of the season with a knee injury. Read more
