The law makers did not fix the root cause of the problem - to much spending and to little income. 1. They did not cut the Governors staff enough. 2. did not cut his wife's staff that I can see 3. did not reduce recurring expenses enough 3. did not sell the air plane 4. did not reduce the bleeding at the Failrunner and the space port.

It ain't over until the fat lady sings. Retardson will veto the legislation, what does he have to lose? Nothing. Veto and start over. Do it Retardson's way or hit the highway, NOT. The legislature has spoken. Retardson is now inbetween a rock and a hard place. Hope he has fun trying to wiggle out of this one.

Big deal, they cut "edukashun" a whole 1% instead of the 25% or more that is needed to rid our schools of the leeches that do not teach anything but get a big salary anyway. This news "story" didn't say anything about Blubbo Bills choo-choo getting the axe, the Intergalactic Space Port that will never benefit this state or its taxpayers, how many of the Blobs friends, exempt employees, will have to go and how much of a pay cut the remaining will have to take, or much of anything really. Since a lack of information leads to speculation I am going to speculate that the people who will take the biggest hit will be those on the lower rung of the echelon ladder like teachers and younger state employees with little seniority. Instead of cutting away the huge blob of fat at the top of the ladder, this patch will cut little pieces of the lean instead. And later this year, and into the next several years, we taxpayers will take the biggest hit. The highway department cannot keep the roads open when we get hit with a snowstorm as it is so expect more road closures this winter. There is not enough money now to repair or rebuild roads in the rural parts of our state so look for them to deteriorate even further. Don't even think about getting help from the state for economic developement in the thousands of little towns scattered all over our state. They cannot get much help as it is and are slowly drying up and blowing away. The way things are going it won't be long before travel off of the interstate highways will be very risky. You may not be able to find a gas station for hundreds of miles because there will no longer be small towns along the way. There are a thousand other things the legislators could have done to get out state finances in order but, as usual, they did nothing. And the sad part is all this nonsense will start up again in about 3 months. A lot of noise coming from the Roundouthouse and nothing getting done.

I agree. -There are 450+ FOB ridiculously paid exempt employees we can cut many more. -The Spaceport is running at $200 million + put it on hold - 1/3 of the deficit. -UNM pork projects need sliced. -UNM Executive salaries need sliced. -And take the State jet keys away from the Governor - we cannot afford this useless ridiculous expense any more. Game over. Should have been done long ago. Just how much has our Gov spent on travel over the past four years?

Geez, maybe here's part of the NM problem. "Lawmakers' reacions to budget fix mixed" How stupid. It's spelled... "Reactions", people. As in react. And they want to cut the education budget? Geez.

Geez, I thought government employees or programs were exempt. Better to let the private sector take the hit for their mistakes. After all, the private sector isn't essential. The government is. We all need their help and control. Isn't that what making more laws is all about?

"Governor Richardson says he'll talk with state employees and the public before making any decision. " In other words,$Bill will talk to his buddies who would be affected, and let them decide whether the state goes bankrupt. He did the same before, talking to the double dippers before vetoing that bill. We need to dump the Democrats who only seem to know how to spend money that isn't there.

What does this knot head expect to hear from the State employees? He will only talk to the public that are liberal and are benifiting from his reckless spending!I am looking forward to the day Billy The Kid rides off into the sunset.

We can only hope that the shortfall in the budget will have a silver lining- getting republican's elected in favor of the same ol lame democrats that are responsible for this.

They didn't even come close to fixing the problems. Watch when they come back in January they will be looking to raise taxes rather than cut the spending.

What about DIVERSITY. We preach it and enforce it in all venues. What is the per cent of lawmakers who are Lawyer?. 90% of incumbents get reelected because they have adopted the business model and start gathering re-election funds the day after being elected. We are victims of no diversity in our legislatures. How ironic is that? LOL.
