Pilot hurt in ultralight plane crash
“He tried to land, but the wing hit first, which caused him to cartwheel”
The pilot of an ultralight aircraft escaped serious injury Saturday when it crashed in a field north of Valley Center after taking off from a private airstrip.
The Sedgwick County sheriff's office said Gary Phillips of Bentley was taken by ambulance in serious condition to Wesley Medical Center after the 2 p.m. crash.
Neil Wretberg, who owns the airstrip where the aircraft was based, said he raced to the scene of the crash after calling 911. He said Phillips appeared to be suffering from a broken leg and bruises. Read more

Bentley requests permanent fire station
“It is not a decision we can just make today and have happen tomorrow”
Having a temporary fire station in town gave the people of Bentley a temporary sense of security.
So on Wednesday they petitioned the Sedgwick County Commission to make it permanent.
Bentley had a two-man fire station from mid-May to the beginning of August, while the community was cut off by reconstruction of the 151st Street bridge across the Arkansas River.
Although Bentley's glad to have the bridge back, 'it was bittersweet when we lost the temporary fire station,' said Shelley Armstrong, one of the leaders of the petition drive. Read more
