Orlando-area renters may gain little from tax amendment

Gov. Charlie Crist used the home of a young Belle Isle family to send a message that voters should support tax changes on the ballot in January.
A throng of about 150 supporters, many of whom were real-estate professionals, attended the front-yard kickoff of a campaign to constitutionally change property taxes in a way that primarily benefits homeowners.
But in Orange County, where the governor helped launch the tax-cut campaign Friday, about four out of every 10 residents do not own a home. Across Florida, more than 5 million residents rent and stand to gain little from the tax measure, landlords say. Read more

Coalition forms to oppose amendment to cut property taxes

A coalition of social-services advocates, teachers, community organizations and labor groups Thursday formed a committee called 'Florida Is Our Home' to campaign to defeat the Jan. 29 property-tax amendment.
Organizers said the measure's cuts -- estimated at $9.5 billion during five years -- will provide scant relief for most homeowners: $240 a year for the average owner.
But the loss of tax dollars for city and county governments could mean deep cuts in education, social-service funding and public-service jobs. Read more
