When Bruce Cochrane told people he was reopening the Lincolnton, N.C., furniture plant his family had operated for most of the last century, more than 1,300 people applied for jobs - no advertising necessary.

Threatened by imports from China and with factories shutting down all around him, John D. Bassett III did something few other manufacturers did: He fought back.
