After a weekend heat wave produced some of the hottest temperatures of the summer, the National weather service predicts cooler weather and possible rain later this week. Monday saw daytime highs of 100 degrees in Victorville.

AV man suspected of workera s comp fraud Updated at

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's office announced Thursday a 68-year-old Apple Valley man who claimed he fell and injured his knee on his way to jury duty before filing for workers' compensation has been charged with fraud. According to DA officials, Scott Masters reported for jury duty at the Barstow courthouse in October 2010.

An Adelanto man accused of raping a woman while she baby-sat at his friend's Barstow home over the weekend was facing felony charges in a Victorville courtroom this week. Nedron Lavoy Green pleaded not guilty Tuesday to rape by force or fear charge, a felony, court records show.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the High Desert, and the watch will remain in effect until Tuesday morning for some parts of the region. Rain began in Victorville on Monday morning and could continue into the evening, the NWS predicts.

While the Victor Valley-Barstow area doesn't have a traditional university campus, the region is home to a growing number of private colleges opening small campuses that cater to both working adults and young community college students wishing to complete a bachelor's degree close to home. Though the High Desert boasts a population of roughly 450,000, the nearest large public university is California State University, San Bernardino - about a 35-mile drive from Victorville and more than 60 miles from Barstow.
